Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-4-- The financial activities of Monster Club members (a group of motley monsters and one human girl) provide the vehicle for a discussion of basic money management and banking. The information is presented in dialogue balloons, which is confusing and difficult to follow. Everything is accurate, but sketchy and not well organized. The colorful drawings are garish and unimaginative; the monsters are not appealing as adorable friends or as threatening ogres. Not a wise investment. --Heide Piehler, Shorewood Public Library, WI

More About the Author

I've been writing and illustrating picture books for children for over twenty-five years. Though I majored in art in college, at the time I wasn't sure what kind of artist to be. Fortunately, it turned out that combining words and art to create picture books was a perfect career for me. Most of my books center around a particular topic such as fractions, the solar system, writing, and so on. The characters and story lines help put the subject matter into a meaningful context for young readers.

After growing up mostly in Delaware, I moved to central Florida a couple of decades ago, and currently live with my husband Andy on a three acre property with hawks, herons, and horses (the horses live next door.) We love the rustle of the pines in the breeze, the screeching of sandhill cranes flying overhead, and the chattering of many small birds that come and go as they please.

4.0 out of 5 stars This is a wonderful math book!, October 3, 2000

I am a student attending USAO in Chickasha, Oklahoma. I am going to school to become an elementary teacher. I had an assignment that wanted me to find math books that were relevant to children. I stumbled upon this book. I found it to be extraordinary! It deals with so many aspects of math and money. I like the way this book deals with the complexity of borrowing and shows how to save and spend money. It makes so many connections to the real world. I must say that I was very very impressed with this book! I hope to use it one day when I am a classroom teacher! I recommend this book to all teachers, students, and parents.

4.0 out of 5 stars Where the Wildly-Inflationary Things Are, August 17, 2011
This review is from: The Monster Money Book (Paperback)
Times are tough all over. The economy's circling the bowl, and most of our cash is being flushed down with it. But some financial fat cat once said you have to spend money to make money -- Alan Greenspan? Donald Trump? Scrooge McDuck? I forget -- so I've been on the lookout for products to help me invest more jackpottily for the future.

I bought this book because I thought it would help me save 'MONSTER MONEY!' with a bunch of helpful personal finance tips. Turns out it's a kids' book. Not so much 'MONEY that *is* MONSTER' as 'MONEY that's *for* MONSTERS'. Which is somewhat less helpful, unless maybe you're a hobgoblin or kraken or panhandling Mothra, perhaps.

On the upside, those nasty creatures in the book sort of remind me of our current financial situation. So I named them accordingly. The big green one is "S&L bailout", the yellow one is "deficit spending", and the unholy chicken-looking thing is "debt ceiling debate".

I may not have saved any money with this book, but at least the future seems a little less scary. There's no such thing as monsters... right?
