5.0 out of 5 stars A Real Gem!
My 5-year old picked this book out at the book store a week and a half ago and since then, she and her brother have read it every day, twice a day. I really enjoy reading this book to my children and they really do love this book. (My 19-month old toddler sits all the way through the book each and every time.) 2.0 out of 5 stars Should have been a board book
This book is cheap. Cute, but cheap. I was expecting a board book, and the content would have been just right for one. It's paperback, with two staples in the middle. I think $...would have been a fair price, especially since I had to reiforce our copy with tape before I could let our 20-month toddler have it. She does enjoy it, and the art is cute, but I felt cheated by...

My 5-year old picked this book out at the book store a week and a half ago and since then, she and her brother have read it every day, twice a day. I really enjoy reading this book to my children and they really do love this book. (My 19-month old toddler sits all the way through the book each and every time.) Not only is it educational but it's a real joy to read even for a "grown-up". M is for Monster covers the 26 letters of the alphabet with fun poetry and beautiful illustrations. I was very pleasantly surprised to find such engaging pictures in a three-dollar children's book. I'm going to buy M for all my nieces and nephews for Christmas. I wasn't planning on taking the kids to watch Monsters, Inc. on opening weekend (we usually wait a week or two) but, after my family's reaction to this book, there's no way we're waiting. I highly recommend M is for Monster for kids of all ages!

4.0 out of 5 stars I wish it was a board book!, February 12, 2003

My two year old loves Monsters Inc. Since we limit TV time at our house, I thought that getting him some books about the movie would be a happy compromise when he wants to watch, and I want to get him away from "the box." He was thrilled to read M is for Monster. The book is written from Mike's point of view. So it starts out with Mike at a drawing board saying, "A is for author. I write AND I'm cute." It goes on to feature several characters from the movie: Boo, Celia, George, Sully. The story itself is written in rhyme. The illustrations are simple but colorful. It's a great book. My only complaint is that it only comes in paperback. It's rather flimsy. I would love to see this as a board book. But even as-is, I think it's definitely worth the money.

A very cute book, but flimsy. The pages are thin paper, just stapled into the glossy cardstock cover. overall, it is ok but it might not last long with most kids.

5.0 out of 5 stars Greatest book since "I Can Fly", December 14, 2001

I think that this book is one of the best children's books we have in our daughter's library. She's almost 2 but with the help of Mike, Sully and Ricky, she is able to recite her ABC's all by herself. The illustrations are absolutely wonderful and the writing is clever and funny. My daughter isn't the only one who can't wait to read it before bedtime.

It's not as if there aren't a zillion alphabet books out there, but this one is surprisingly sweet and engaging. It's written from the point of view of "Mike Wazowski", who seems to have a bit of a twisted sense of humor even for a monster! How can you not love something like "E is for eyeball, I have only one"??? It's reasonably sturdy with a fun irregular shape, too. My four-year-old loves it.

Our girls love this book! Cute alphabet poem and great pictures. All we hear now is "I want Sulley!" or "I'm Celia!". It's almost driving us parents batty!! But we can't deny the charm of this book. Great job Ninong!

5.0 out of 5 stars AMAZING ART DIRECTOR!!, February 9, 2003
This review is from: M Is for Monster (Monsters, Inc.) (Paperback)
A book all children should have. Children learn their ABCs and enjoy very well crafted artwork by Ricky Nierva, who is by far one of the most talented directors at Pixar. You can't lose with this one. Well worth the money. And if you're looking for a few other great titles, look no further than these, Buckland's Hot List: most creative, The Butterfly: A Fable (Singh); most engaging, The Alchemist (Coelho); most interesting, Life of Pi (Martel); most enlightening, 9-11 (Chomsky); most thrilling, The Lovely Bones: A Novel (Sebold); and finally, the most creative, engaging, interesting, enlightening and thrilling book of all, The Little Prince (Saint-Exupery). These are the books I'd recommend to my family, friends, students, and wife. There are many more, trust me, but these are the first that come to mind (for having left an impact slight or proud as it may be). If you have any questions, queries, or comments, or maybe even a title you think I should add to my list, please feel free to e-mail me. I'm always open to a good recommendation. Thanks for reading my brief but hopefully helpful review. Happy reading. Donald S. Buckland.
