A Great Listen (Even Theodore Rex!),
By A Customer
This review is from: The Monster Movie Music Album (Audio CD)
If you've never seen all these movies (and hopefully you haven't), you can simply put on the CD and enjoy the music of bygone monster flicks. Those who have an awareness of some of these movies may be absolutely flummoxed by the choice of selections. The Godzilla tracks are givens, as are the King Kong ones, and the collection of Caveman Movie tracks somewhat makes sense. But what compelled the Prague Philharmonic to try their hand at the Main Title from "Theodore Rex"? Or "We're Back! - A Dinosaur's Story"? Although these films don't fit into anyone's category of "Monster Movie" (and to be technical, the sheer awfulness and subsequent non-release of TR may cause some to argue its categorization as a "movie"), the music holds up very well. Neat liner note art, as well (c'mon, Amazon.com, show it!).

Well-performed renditions of classic monster movie themes. The Godzilla theme, & King Kong (the original) are particularly good. The Hipster gives it a Big Thumbs UP!

I was expecting this to be made up of actual soundtrack material, but instead it's quite nicely recorded new versions of all the themes. The playing is a bit sloppy, especially some of the snare playing (one the godzilla marches especially), but overall I was quite surprised by how well it was done. The tracklist is also interesting. I am surprised they bothered digging up the soundtracks to One Million Years BC and When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth, both of which had quite memorable soundtracks and are treated with respect here. The king kong themes are nice, with the King Kong Lives being a very surprising addition. The stuff from Mysterious Island is also quite excellent. However, the stuff from Baby, Theodore Rex, and We're Back is almost as lame as the movies themselves. It's too bad they had to include those instead of doing more along the lines of the rest of it, but I'd still recommend this for any fans of the music from any of these movies. There's some great stuff on here.

The Monster Movie Music album is one of the best compilations Silva America has ever released. You have music from The Godzilla films and of course King Kong, music from Max Steiner, John Barry and John Scott. In addition there is some music by James Horner from the two Land Before Time animated films. I only wonder why Silva didn't include tracks from the two Jurassic Park films? They would have fit with all the other dinosaur tracks.
Be sure to check out the Disaster Movie Music album as well. |
