Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 1-Stewart is a grape-colored monster shaped like a humanoid robot. He needs a dentist and, yes, a haircut. His olive-green locks writhe away from his square head, and, in the course of the story, get longer, more tangly, and, finally, occupied. A spider is keeping a toothbrush, lollipop, ipod, etc., company. But does Stewart listen to his friend Feliz or to the urgings of his parents to get a haircut? He does not. (At least, not until-well, let's just say there's a fine line between scary hair and funny hair.) Barton's ink-and-Photoshop pictures are as wild and disorderly as the protagonist's locks. They're more exuberant than organized, and a little effort will be needed to follow the story. More significant is its length, which exceeds the attention span of the book's likely audience. While excellent haircut-themed books abound, such as Don Freeman's Mop Top (Viking, 1955), Elivia Savadier's No Haircut Today! (Roaring Brook, 2005), and Matthew McElligott's Even Monsters Need Haircuts (Walker, 2010), the silly illustrations might catch some young readers' attention.-Susan Weitz, formerly at Spencer-Van Etten School District, Spencer, NYα(c) Copyright 2011. I have such fond memories of reading with my parents when I was a child. I also remember which books made them groan to have to read, and which ones they were thrilled to pick up for the umpteenth time. This wonderful book is absolutely one I'll just happen to "suggest" over and over again. It makes me and my little girl laugh and laugh and laugh. It's very clever, very charming, and I never feel like it's dumbing down its voice for the suggested age group. I find new details and funny references every time I read it -- without it every sacrificing the hilarious and heartwarming story my daughter responds to -- that of a monster and his family (and let's face it, sometimes our little ones can be monsters). Although the art in this book is clearly designed for a younger audience, it reminds me of how fun it was to read "The Eleventh Hour" and "Animalia" when I was older (great picture books where you could look at the art for hours and always find something new). My daughter and I always find something new in Stewart's hair, or in the background of the story that makes us smile. And we have so much fun coming up with NEW things that could get lost in his hair. This is a truly special book. One of the rare NEW BOOKS that I'll fold into the mix of all the nostalgic ones I've saved to read my daughter from when I was a kid. Watching her respond to this book, I know she'll be saving it to read to her kids one day, too. I highly recommend this book. It's already made quite an impression in our household.

Boys, girls, adults, children...everyone will love this book! A perfect book for the child who is getting his/her first haircut and might be a little nervous. Bethany Barton has developed a wonderful character that I hope we will be seeing more of! If you are looking for a book to make you or your loved one smile this is it...I love it!!!

I love the book. I am a grandmother and have told all of my friends to buy a copy for their grandchildren. It's cute. It's funny. The illustrations are wonderful. And the book deals with a real issue. When will the next Stewart book come out? Ms Barton, please write another!

I wish I would have had this book when it was time for my oldest to have her hair cut. It make both monsters and haircuts NOT scary! Cute, clever, great illustrations for both my kids and I to enjoy.

As a parent who spends hours in the children's section of the bookstore trying to find books that are entertaining AND make sense; this book is a gem! It's brilliantly colorful and full of humor that even my 7- and 8- year-olds enjoy. The illustrations are charming and original keeping my sons looking for new details every time we read it. As a parent of a high-functioning autistic child haircuts (and many other "normal" activities) can be frightening and challenging for our family. This book is making our routine trips to the stylist easier and much more enjoyable. And since he also enjoys reading the same books over and over, I never get tired of reading about Stewart. We can't wait for more from Bethany Barton.

Bethany certainly knows how to delight a child and the adult reading the story to the child. Like Sesame Street she writes for many levels of ages, intellect and humor.
I am a theatre educator and will use this book ( and hopefully others to come) in my classes to stimulate creative fun. I enjoy how these characters ignite the students imagination and creative exploration!
The illustrations hold great new surprises every time you revisit the book. I find great delight as I watch my students become the characters in this book and explore the FUN of trying on the characters and their view of the world.
Keep writing, Bethany Barton, you offered a new treasure to a child's book favorites, and I look forward to many more of Stuart's adventures.

My daughter is 3 1/2 and ready for her first hair cut. I looked and looked and there are not a lot of choices for little girls around this age for educating and preparing for a haircut. This book is ok. It's written a little above a 3 year old's level but it was better than not having a story to educate and prepare her. She did really well at her first haircut so all in all worth the buy. Be aware thought that this is not a "board book' so it doesn't have thick laminated pages. It's a regular book with paper pages that will tear really easily if you let your toddler have at it.

My then 2-year old daughter's hair was in a desperate state. My mother is a hair stylist, but after a failed attempt at grandma's salon, we turned to this book. One read (it took some convincing even to read a book about haircuts) and she was chattering away about getting a haircut. Successful trip to the salon that weekend!

The book is adorable. Features a monster who loves his hair and thinks cutting it will make him different. He learns otherwise. Quirky illustrations. Your kids will love it.
