    Book Description

Learning to count has never been more fun, thanks to award-winning author/illustrator, Nathan Walker! Monster Soup teaches children to count as they follow a bright purple monster-chef preparing some delicious “monster soup". Some of his unusual ingredients include: one oldy-moldy chunk o'cheese, three bitter bat wings, six gooey gastropods, eight orphaned ogre toes, and nine gruesome gargoyle ears! The zany, yet beautiful illustrations will captivate and amuse young readers, as they count along. And the silly and somewhat slimy ingredient list will have young ones eager to count more and more things even after the story ends...and may even inspire some new culinary delights as well!

3.0 out of 5 stars Monster Mash April 7, 2013

This book is advertised to be a counting book. A monster is choosing ghoulish ingredients to make a monster stew. The pictures are colorful. Each rather disgusting ingredient is accompanied by a number. The author uses alliteration in his rhymes. Some examples are Foulish fish, or bitter bats. The rhymes are catchy and a young child will enjoy repeating them. The drawback is that I see the rhyme being more memorable than the numbers. I would have liked to see what happens to the stew after it is made!

Monster Soup has a little intro then is basically just the numbers 1 to 10, each on a page of their own with a few words describing a gross ingredient to go into the monster's soup. Sort of like the twelve days of Christmas but without the repetition of repeating anything (which I think is a good thing). Ingredients include foulest fish skeletons, withered witch noses, and rancid rat rumps to name but three. There really isn't much to the storyline, if it had less quality illustrations it wouldn't be much of an appealing read, but the high quality illustrations do lift the appeal factor of the book.

    Monster Soup by Nathan Walker
Illustrated very silly colorful children's book showing how to make
the perfect monster soup. It has 10 ingredients and each of the pages
shows the numbers making this a good counting book. The ingredients don't
always look what we think they should look like but with a soup everything is
    mixed up all together.

Goofy and Gorey in a fun way! My five year old grandson loves it and goes back for it each time. Illustrations are wonderful and the counting is just right for his level. MMMMMmmm. If Tucker loves, I love it.
