5.0 out of 5 stars Gary goes Coastal and it Rocks!
I've always been a huge Gary Hoey fan, so when I found out he was not only releasing a new album (though he's done a couple of the songs before, like "Wipe out"), but a surf album, I was ecstatic! I could tell from the track listing before I even bought it that this album was going to be great. I definitely wasn't dissapointed. Gary adds a rockin' twist to a memorable...

1.0 out of 5 stars You've gotta be kidding me...
First off, let me state that I think Gary Hoey is a fabulous guitarist. Which is why I rate this CD with one star. Most of the songs are covers, and of that, some are re-hashes from other CDs. Come on Gary, give us a disc of originals. You don't see Satch or Vai spewing out other players materials, at least not pre-dominantly.

I could tell from the track listing before I even bought it that this album was going to be great. I definitely wasn't dissapointed. Gary adds a rockin' twist to a memorable genre of music from days gone by. All of the best surf songs ever are on it, but the best two by far are "Surfin' USA," and the theme to "Hawaii Five-O." Don't miss out on this one. Hang Ten!

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid Album. Almost All Covers, June 27, 2005
This review is from: Monster Surf (Audio CD)
Most of these tracks improve on the original songs which is hard to do considering they were great in the first place. A couple of songs (Wipeout, Gone Surfin, Misirlou) have appeared before on previous albums and are excellent. The last few tracks of original material by Gary is also excellent.

4.0 out of 5 stars great album, but the MP3 files are very grainy, August 27, 2010

I really like the music, but the MP3 audio files sound like they were recorded with bad speakers turned up too loud, lots of grain and blurred high end. It needs to be clean. I've listened to it on three different machines with different speakers and headphones, it's definitely the track. Too bad, it needs to be digitally remastered :/

4.0 out of 5 stars Rockin' & Rollin' Souped Up Surf, December 14, 2009

The album is a witness to superb instrumental guitar playing musicianship. It lives up to the title Monster Surf: Surf Songs that Really Rock. Hoey does a great job giving new head-banging life to the old Safari song Wipeout. He also does a wonderful job playing old Ventures covers such as Pipline and Walk, Don't Run. If you are interested in instrumental guitar played with abandon in a souped up surf style, this is an album not to miss.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gary Hoey is a great shredding guitarist., January 6, 2007
This review is from: Monster Surf (Audio CD)
If you like shredding and surf, this album will be your favorite. Hoey is an exceptionally accurate player (like Satch and Vai), but throws new life and power into old standards like Surfin' USA or California Dreaming. His version of Wipeout using power chords is worth the price of the whole album.

...hoey's covers are done with alot of energy and melody. In some cases he makes these songs his own. there are also about three original tunes which jive real well with the rest of the other rock guitar performances. excellent driving music or just sitting at home listening to power metal, rock, of even some pop.
