What Critics Are Saying About Monster Turbine
  • "Looks like Monster is doing more than just diversifying itself: It is serious about being a player in the headphone market." --David Worthington, Technologizer
  • "We got a chance to try them out for ourselves and they are indeed very powerful and with an amazing amount of clarity for in-ear headphones...from the time we've spent so far with them - they're worth every penny." --Helena Stone, Chip Chick
  • "Monster's Turbine in-ear headphone delivers excellent sound quality, with strong bass; robust, all metal construction; handsome carry case." --Steve Guttenberg, CNET.com
  • "Monster hit their mark with the Turbines and listeners, both casual and discerning, will be satisfied with both their quality and value." --Sal Cangeloso, Geek.com
  • "All in all, the Turbines are a nice entry into the in-ear headphone arena by Monster, and fantastic sound quality for the price—just make sure your music lives up to their high standards." --Benny Goldman, Gizmodo.com
  • "…big sound, good bass, and comfort that you’d expect from full size high-end speakers." --Richard M. Sherwin, ElectronicHouse.com
  • "How do they sound? In a word, fantastic." --Aric Annear, End User
  • "At last, killer ear buds!" --Tommy Shaw, Styx
  • "When paired with any of my portable devices (or non-portable ones for that matter) the Turbines sounded great. As promised, they deliver better bass than almost any other product at the price level, balanced out by solid mids and pretty clear highs. If volume is an issue for you, don’t worry, the Turbines can get quite loud without distortion, a feat that many in-ear headphones cannot accomplish." --- Sal Cangeloso, geek.com
  • "... let’s do talk about sound. It’s stellar. Monster calls these “in-ear speakers” instead of “in-ear headphones” because they feel the sound is that good, and it’s not far from that. The audio is clear and full with impressive (but not muddy) bass for both music and games; sometimes annoyingly so, but that’s my own fault. Remember when you thought a 128 kbps bit rate was fine for your MP3s? You’re going to be paying for that with these headphones, because you’ll definitely hear all of the imperfections. It’s a fair trade-off, though, because you’ll also hear bits of your music that are lost on cheaper headphones."- Kirk Hiner, appletell.com
  • The Turbine Pros are surely the best ear-bud-type headphones I've heard and ones I could be happy with for years to come. The Turbines are stylish, perform strongly across the board, are comfortable and built to last.- Todd Whitesel, Audio Video Revolution
  • From the Manufacturer

Life is Too Short to Listen to Bad Headphones. These days, we spend a lot of time listening to music with headphones. Every minute you spend enjoying your music should be the best it can be, but ordinary headphones can't deliver the rich dynamics, full range, and emotional impact of your favorite music.Sound So Incredible, We Had to Call Them In-Ear Speakers Monster Turbines truly deliver the big sound, power, and clarity that you'd expect from full size high-end speakers. That's why we had to call them speakers, not headphones.Bass So Deep, it Sounds Like There's a Subwoofer Unlike other headphones that can't reproduce deep bass, Monster Turbines accurately reproduce even the lowest bass notes without distortion. You'll hear thunderous low-end for incredible sound with every kind of music, from the thumping bass beats of hip hop tracks to the deepest pipe organ notes in classical compositions. Less Noise, More Music. We live in a noisy world that can interfere with your listening. Monster Turbines include multiple sound isolating ear-tips to give you a perfect fit that seals out unwanted noise for a pure listening experience.Secure, Comfortable Fit for Active Lifestyles In-ear headphones give you total freedom to move for life on-the-go. But they don't always stay where they are or even in your ear, especially if you're working out. Monster's ear hooks keep your headphones firmly in place. They're lightweight, easy to wear and remove, and easily bend to fit your ear's shape.

I have had the opportunity to listen to the Monster Turbine for a month or so. In my experience the earphones I have purchased, especially the ones with dynamic drivers, they often need a certain amount of burn-in time before they reach their full potential. I have burned in the Monster with a mix of pink noise and a variety of music for around 100 hours before I started listening to them seriously.

In the past couple of years I have "collected" earphones in my search for the ultimate sound. I have used these to compare to the Monster Turbine and I have categorized them into three groups:
Lower budget earphones($15-40): Koss Sparkplug, Skullcandy Ink'd JVC HAFX66, JVC HAFX33, Sennheiser CX300, Soundmagic PL-30 and 12, Maximo IM-390. Mid budget earphones($50-90): Ultimate Ears Super fi.3, NUFORCE NE-7M, Denon 551, Shure E2c Crossroads mylarone Bijou 3 and Altec Lansing IM716. Upper budget earphones($100-200) Audeo PFE 112, Shure SE310, Q-Jays and Yuin OK2.

The music I have been listening to The Turbines with has been a mix of different artist and genres.
Classical rock (Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Eagles, Neil Young, The Doors, Dire Straits, Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Black Sabbath, Rush). Electronica (Infected Mushrooms, Daft Punks, Kraftwerk, Aphex Twins )
New wave/eighties music (Spandau Ballet, Lloyd Cole, Talking Heads, The Clash, New Order, Peter Gabriel). Alt.Rock ( Nirvana, REM, Pearl Jam, Coldplay, Smashing Pumkins, The Pixies). New Metal (Nightwish, Dream Theatre, Porcupine Three, Evanescence, Metallica). Female artists within Jazz/folk/opera ( Diana Krall, Kari Bremnes, Joni Mitchell, Sara Brightman) Jazz/fusion (John Mchauglin, Al di Meola, Andy Mckee, Charlie Parker John Coltrane, Pat Metheny) And many more..

I'm a gardener by profession, so I listen to my MP3 player a LOT. I love that I can get concert-quality sound out in the field and while being active. The no-tangle wires actually work and save me a lot of hassle. I'm very glad I got them!

    1. Tell us about your experience opening the Turbine box.
When I first received the Fedex package and opened the box I was stunned by the high quality packaging that Monster used to package the Monster Turbine In ear Speakers. It reminded me of the high quality packaging that I get when I open a lot of the Apple products that I own.

What are your impressions of the packaging and presentation?
When I opened up the box it was perfect the Monster Turbine in ear speakers were displayed like a fine piece of Jewelry. The magnetic clasps on the side of the box showed the high attention to detail that you put into every part of the packaging. I really liked the statement on the inside of the box from the Head Monster "Life is too short to listen to bad headphones". This is such a true statement that after people take the time to listen to these in ear speakers they will begin to appreciate how music is meant to be heard.

    2. Describe the music you used to compare Turbines and your own headphones
In order to compare the Monster Turbine in ear speakers vs. my Ultimate Ears LE headphones I listened to a variety of different music. I began my test by listening to some of my favorite hard rock bands like Metallica, Disturbed, Trapt, Papa Roach, and Motley Crue. Then I wanted to hear how female vocals sounded so I went to Marion Rave, Pink and Hillary Duff. To really test the quality of the speakers I even listened to some Trans Siberian Orchestra and Metallica when they played with the San Francisco Symphony.

    3. Tell us about the music sources you used (portable player, laptop computer, etc.) and how well they each worked with Turbines.

To do my testing I used both 3G IPhone as well as my IPod.

Bought these headphones about 5 months ago. They actually sound pretty great, when they're not falling out of your ear or not isolating sound. After 2 months they went out, I sent them to monster, and got them replaced by a brand new pair. Which then lasted about 2 months, and went out again. I would expect this out of a $20 set, but 100+ dollars? Definitely not.

Monster sent out many pairs of these earphones to applicants for free as review samples. I missed out on that, but as the reviews started rolling in, it seems many people really thought these were excellent sounding, even the picky users on the head-fi.org site. Could it be that these were really that good? So I decided to buy a pair to try. These earphone look good on paper, and appear well built.

These are Monster's own In Ear style monitors which use passive noise reduction to block outside sound. Basically they block noise like earplugs. Like many other IEMs, these come with an assortment of tip to ensure a comfortable but tight seal. A tight acoustical seal is necessary for it to sound right, and block out noise. It comes with dome rubber tips as well as two tri-flange "tree" type tips. I found the tri-flange tips worked best with the least effort of inserting them correctly.

You get a leather-like case with magnetic clasp, but the case is flawed in that there is a large gap in the side so lint and dirt can make its way into the case too easily. Too bad because it's one of the nicest storage cases I've seen bundled.

The body of the earphone is metal, with a turbine look that resembles the RCA connectors of other Monster audio/video cables. The cord has a coating/material which seems to resist tangling better than other thin cables of other earphones. Very nice job overall in the looks, apparent quality, and packaging of these earphones

    Comfort:
The dome tips didn't work for me at all. I could not get a good seal without really taking a lot of time to insert the earphones, pushing them pretty deeply into my ear, which made it very hard to get out.
