According to my son, Mr. Schnitzlein "rocks"!,
By
This review is from: The Monster Who Ate My Peas (Hardcover)
My family and I were fortunate enough to get to meet Mr. Schnitzlein at a ceremony at my son's school and hear a live reading of the book. My 11-year old son, one of the oldest kids present, begged for a copy of his own (although it is really written for a younger age group)! We thoroughly enjoyed the book as well as Mr. Schnitzlein's very entertaining presentation and the "writer's workshop" he gave to the children. The characters in his book (even the monster) are as warm and inviting as the author himself. The plot kept even the adults on the edge of their seats, and the laughter never stopped from first page to last. We can hardly wait for the next book to emerge from the very creative mind of this author.

Fantastic!,

What a great book! Kids will love it cuz it relates to their daily frustrations of doing things that they aren't fond of, and connects with the things kids do to get out of what is expected of them. In the end, the boy in the story learns that taking the easy road lost him some things that meant the world to him, and stole the opportunity he had for enjoying the peas he wouldn't give a chance.
Parents will like the book: 1) because the story rhymes and is, actually, enjoyable to read aloud and with inflection; and, 2) it shows "little rebels" that being stubborn and taking the easy road in life can come back to haunt you! Both parent and child will like the imaginative steps taken to teach the lesson, the happy ending, and the wonderful illustrations! This is a book that can be read over and over and over, and enjoyed every time! I keep going to the library to check it out again and again; and, more often than not, it is not available! Enjoy!

A really cool book that appeals to kids of all ages ... even this grandmother!,

Everyone tells me I'm just an overgrown kid ... and when it comes to children's books, how right they are! And when I find one I think is a clever idea with the added bonus of fun, lyrical verse AND fabulous artwork, I'm as giggly as any three-year-old.
Seriously, I have always enjoyed reading children's books, having caught the "fever" when my own kids were small. And now they're grown, as are my grandchildren, but the habit has not left me. This book is one of my very favorites, right up there with The Boy Under The Bed and some of Jay Leno's books. But what I like isn't nearly as important as what the kids like, and the kids at the corner nursery that I visit from time to time with the book I authored are NUTS about this book. Highly recommended. SIDENOTE: You may have noticed that Amazon has made some changes to its website. If it looks the same to you right now, look out for a new format that will be rolling out gradually in the weeks to come. If you can see the changes, especially the review format, I'd like to know what you think. Please leave me a comment with your opinion. "Love the new look" or "Hate the new look" comments are perfectly acceptable. My e-mail address is at top of this review. Thank you for your time."

Please Read it Again!,

The rhyme, the subject and the illustrations are a perfect marriage in this book. Children ask for it to be read over and over again. They clamor at the end that there's more monsters waiting for him to trade again. And then they are eager to share just what they'd be willing to trade in order to not have to clean the toilet or eat their liver or whatever disgusts them. It's a great story to break the ice with kids and even to read using voices. Publishers Weekly has no clue about what appeals to kids- the Lima Bean Monster is a shelf sitter and the illustrations do nothing to excite kids about the story. Use this book instead and your kids will be begging for another story like it. I can't wait to see the new book being published by this author and hope the illlustrator will be right there with him to turn kids into readers.

After hearing Mr. Schnitzlein read his story in person at the school in which I teach, I just HAD to buy it. The students LOVED it, as well as the adults in the room. This book is a breath of fresh air and the illustrations are wonderful! I highly recommend this book to kids of ALL ages!!! Two thumbs up, Mr. Schnitzlein and Mr. Faulkner!

My 2-year old daughter begs for this book. She has the words mostly memorized. It is a wonderful lesson in a number of ways, and also delightful to read. I am still not tired of it. After checking it out from the library 5 times, and paying late-return fees, I decided we must own it.

Danny Schnitzlein and Matt Faulkner have written and illustrated an amazing childhood fantasy. The story leaps at you out of the pages and illustrations and gives an astounding feeling of being one with the story of what you would like to have done as a child faced with the foods of your day.You live the story page after page and will leave the book with a strong feeling of being one with Danny against the monster. It gives you a great feeling of accomplishment of good fighting the monster.Everyone who reads this book will loudly applaud at the end.

This is a lovely and funny book for picky eaters. I gave a copy to my great niece as she is one who doesn't like to try new foods and will only eat a limited variety. She did try something new after she was read the book-she is four years old. She thought the book was very funny and told me all about it when I saw her. We'll see if she continues to try new things. I have also read this book to first graders and they absolutely enjoy the rhyming as well as the story. When the monster asks for his dog they all get into telling him not to give him up!!
