Book Description

June 1, 2002
Cynthia Rowland was an outwardly vivacious and successful television news reporter, who inwardly had slipped into the depths of bulimia. An addiction to binging and purging and heavy doses of laxatives finally landed her in treatment. The Monster Within tells the story of her descent into sickness, her struggle to learn why she was engaging in slow suicide, and the courage and grace it took to get well.
This updated edition includes a section of answers to some of the common questions the author is asked about bulimia. Anyone suffering from an eating disorder (there are eight million bulimics in America alone), as well as parents, friends, counselors, and pastors will find hope and help through this engaging true life story.

Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

Cynthia Rowland McClure was an outwardly vivacious and successful television journalist, who inwardly had slipped into the depths of bulimia.

For twelve lonely and desperate years, as she battled her personal monster, suicide was often on her mind. It seemed the only way to escape the hopelessness she felt. Cynthia managed to hide her struggle until a friend finally steered her to a Dallas clinic. There she was able to confront the realities of her past and look to the future with optimism.

In The Monster Within, Cynthia openly shares her struggle to learn why she was engaging in destructive behavior and the courage and grace it took to get well. If you or someone you know struggles with an eating disorder, this true life story will provide answers, hope, and help.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Monster Within: Facing an eating disorder, August 12, 2006
This review is from: Monster Within, The: Facing an Eating Disorder (Paperback)
I had purchased this book for an adult child of friends but thought I'd better read it first. What a book!! Many people can identify with the issues being addressed, even if they don't have an eating disorder!

It is an easy and quick read (outside of the emtional reaction times) and I highly reccommend it to anyone who has an eating disorder or knows someone who has - VERY POWERFUL!!!

This review is from: Monster Within, The: Facing an Eating Disorder (Paperback)
The Monster Within is a detailed story of Cynthia's battle with Bulimia. Her stay in the hospital is well documented, and she shares her emotions through her recovery process. It is helping me to see the pain these women experience in their daily lives as they work their recovery. It is hard work and one must be diligent. This is an excellent book!
