A ghoulishly fascinating discovery!, August 31, 2009
This review is from: The Monsterologist: A Memoir in Rhyme (Hardcover)
If you have ever wondered how Dr. Frankenstein's monster views his inventor, what the Loch Ness Monster thinks about being the mysterious center of attention, or the whys and wherefores of werewolves, trolls, ogres and other fiends, just ask THE MONSTEROLOGIST, a.k.a., Bobbi Katz. Bobbi has been rewarding children for decades with poetry at once deft and delightful, as witness her latest foray into the world of the woolly and weird. The collection includes, among other gems, a frightfully clever poem by the Verbivore in which the reader is asked to provide that most important of all the parts of speech.
Adam McCauley's illustrations, purportedly fabricated with paper, spaghetti, twigs, as well as "things found on the street," blend devilishly with the poems. Kids who are looking for a book of verse that's strikingly different--and funny!--will have to wait a long time before this imaginative tribute to monsters meets its rival.

Bigger than life. Fun. Creative., October 16, 2009
This review is from: The Monsterologist: A Memoir in Rhyme (Hardcover)
The Monsterologist: A Memoir in Rhyme is not quite what I expected. I'm not sure what I expected, but this oversized 50-page book begins with a poem from the monsterologist assuring the reader
"if monsters are what interest you,
the how and why of what they do,
I know the facts: What's false, what's true,
since I'm a monsterologist."
The subsequent pages feature the monster's reports (in verse of course) about various monsters he's encountered: trolls, golems, Cyclops, ghosts, the yeti, and even the suds-surfing sock-eater. It's a book that is sure to captivate the school-age child's interested in monsters, and perhaps expose him (or her) to some poetry that he might not usually read.

The Katz Meow, September 15, 2009
This review is from: The Monsterologist: A Memoir in Rhyme (Hardcover)
What fun! The Monsterologist has joined a whole bunch of favorite books by Bobbi Katz. Her special brew of witty rhymes and witchy, twitchy imagery is irresistible, and the whimsical ghoulishness of Adam McCauley's illustrations adds perfectly fiendish seasoning. It all adds up to a deliciously diabolical dish - so dig in!
