5.0 out of 5 stars Another Great Album by Vancouver's Own
Mad Child and Prevail deliver a solid performance on the Swollen Members latest release from Battle Axe Records, Monsters in the Closet.

As far as remix albums are concerned, this one is pretty damn tight. There's some really cool new takes on some of the tunes from Bad Dreams which make for a great listen, and should probably hold me over until their next...

versus
3.0 out of 5 stars Swollen's Worst Effort, But Still Not Bad
there are good tracks and weak tracks, and in amoungst it all are a few standouts. Surprisingly the best song is Red Dragon, which is a Moka Only song, not a Swollen track. I think S&M attempted to make a comercially accesable and hopefully sucessfull cd and in this attempt lost some of what made them unique and good to begin with.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Creative, October 17, 2004

That is not how I would usually describe a rap album, but I must for it is just that: very creative and original. They were just playing it at a records store and I took little notice of it at first; then I heard "Rockapella" and was imediately impressed. Upon furtherlistening I found out that these guys are more comparable to Jurassic 5 and not Eminem (idiot, looser, jerk, fool). Great catchy rap music.

As far as remix albums are concerned, this one is pretty damn tight. There's some really cool new takes on some of the tunes from Bad Dreams which make for a great listen, and should probably hold me over until their next LP.

Appearances by Moka Only and fellow Vancouverite Nelly Furtado also add to the mix which makes for a pretty tasty musical gumbo.

Overall, it's another solid outing from the Swollen Members.

5.0 out of 5 stars Swollen again brings it home, February 16, 2003
This review is from: Monsters in the Closet (Audio CD)
Again Cananda's most renound rap band have done it again. Introducing a new breed of hip-hop to the world and guess what?...it works. Compiled of some old tracks that have been made up to date and a few new tracks that still breathe of the same swollen members that we all know form the first and second album. While Stepin thru uses moko only's vocals to create a calm and laid back effect,i'm alive is a more grittier track and there is also the more serious side on a long way down using Sarah Maclaglan's vocals as the harmony in the song. This is a must buy for any Swollen members fans and also for anyone who likes hip-hop and rap. Believe me u will like!

5.0 out of 5 stars S+M aLL tHe WaY!, February 15, 2003

Overall, this album was totally awesome. It has hard-hitting tracks like Red Dragon, Crunch and Freak Fantasic, and softer tracks like Long Way Down. This album has something for everyone! Whether you're into Swollen's underground vibe, or their newer, more 'mainstream' vibe. For all those people that say Monsters In The Closet is tottaly different than Balance, they are absolutely right. I believe the reason for this is that S+M have found that 'formula' that they have mentioned several times. But without taking on some of this 'formula' Swollen might not be as sucessful as they are today. They are not 'sell outs' like some of you think. They are grounded, they know where they came from, and they know where they want to go. They are UnDeRgRoUnD fOrEvEr, and will never loose that underground vibe or influence. This album is great, and if you like hip hop of any sort, buy it!

Well If you like swollen members then you will like this album. Equipt with tracks from the balance days to new unreleased songs with a mainstream tint to them. A Standout track for me though would have to be "Breathe" with Nelly Furtado another BC raised artist, aswell as "Long Way Down" with a cut from the Sarah Mcglauchlan "ice cream". Ive owned this album for awhile now and still enjoy it.

4.0 out of 5 stars ITS OK, BUT JUST OK, April 18, 2009
This review is from: Monsters in the Closet (Audio CD)
THIS CD WAS TIGHT...AS FAR AS PRODUCTION GOES IT WAS ON POINT, THE LYRICS WERE MEDIOCRE, AND BEATS WERE PRETTY GOOD. THEIR MUSIC SOUNDS DIFFERENT FROM REGULAR RAP THATS OUT NOW, A LITTLE BIT LIKE WHITE PEOPLES RAP MUSIC. NOT TO SAY ITS BAD, BUT I JUST THOUGHT ALL THE SONGS SOUNDED THE SAME AND THE HOOKS ON ALMOST ALL THE TRACKS WERE HORRIBLE, AND THE REASON I SKIPPED THE SONG.

it's actually hard to classify this album in any one particular group, the music is so different on most of the songs it's what I call a moody CD, a song for every mood:)

The songs with Nelly Furtado "breathe" and Sarah Mclaughlin "long way down", are amazing, almost trip hop feel to them, just amazing, and the song " act on it" has a smooth classy feel to it, like old school Roots stuff...it's just a great album..

5.0 out of 5 stars Monsters in the Closet ---> TOP STUFF, August 27, 2006

Great group, great CD. Definitely a recommended buy. The single "Breath" is a nice little bonus with Nelly Furtado that sounds different to anything else out there.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Album, May 26, 2004
This review is from: Monsters in the Closet (Audio CD)
Swollen Members is better than most out there currently. Monsters in the Closet is a great album. I have three of their cd's and am planning on buying Balance soon. This isn't the best I heard but it is much better than the US mainstream.
