4 year old gives this 2 monster thumbs up!,

This review is from: Monsters!: Draw Your Own Mutants, Freaks & Creeps (Paperback)
My son loves monsters and anything creepy. He is always drawing ghosts and spiders and other Halloween creatures. So when I saw this book on Amazon, I thought I'd give it a try. The book was a clear hit. We have some other books with step by step drawing instructions (animals, fish, etc) but this book was layed out a little differenty. There are a few pages that have the standard 'step 1: draw a circle, step 2: draw a rectangle under the circle' kind of instructions. But what is really great about the way this book approaches drawing is to separate by feature. So there is a 2 page layout on eyes. It talks about how to draw angry eyes, dizzy eyes, sleepy eyes, etc; and gives lots of examples. There are similar pages dedicated to body types, ears, mouths, legs, hands, tails, etc. This is great because it makes it easy to pull ideas from different pages and create your own monster masterpieces. It also has pages on texture (scaly vs hairy vs feather, etc), and how to use color to enhance your drawing. It's just a fantastic book and one that has different things that will appeal to different ages. My 4 year old doesn't read yet, so some of it was over his head, but he was still able to learn some different techniques. And if you are looking for the standard step by step instructions, it does have a few pages of those too.
I also picked up 1-2-3 Draw Cartoon Monsters. This has more of your standard step by step layout, but is also a nice drawing book. My son's only complaint with this other book was that the monsters weren't creepy enough.

I gave this to my son as a christmas present and it has helped him to draw simple creatures much better than he ever could. My eldest daughter is very talented artistically and she agrees it is very easy to help him draw the monsters in this book.

I gave this book as a gift to a 3 and 5 year old, and they have spent many hours drawing monsters from it. They don't always follow the steps in the book, but just having the variety of monster drawings in a book gives them inspiration and guidance for drawing all sorts of things.
