Extremely Disappointing,
By
This review is from: Monsters (Dungeons & Dragons Miniatures) (Misc.)
Just as with the other set of miniatures (Heroes), I was very disappointed. The only good thing I can say about this set is that at least all 6 miniatures were present in this box (rather than having 1 missing as with the other set). The bad thing is that not only did most of the miniatures come in 2 or more pieces that were in many cases hard to glue together, one of the 6 was so bend out of shape that nothing could be done to save it.My advice: stay away from these miniatures and buy your miniatures from a company that specialises in them, rather than buying this set...

Very poor casting,

I have to agree with Jos Ververgaard, this set as well as the Heroes set is badly cast with discoloration of the models and some air bubbles. This is overshadows the fact that the models are finely detailed, the amount of work needed to make these models representable is not worth it In all not worth buying

Takes some work to use even without paint,

Good looking figures overall, although the goblins I got are completely identical, not "uniquely posed" as the description states. I'm not a fan of the new trend of cookie-cutter bases which need some extra work to hold the figures. The ogre and the orc are the best of the set and have nice detail. The displacer beast is pretty shabby in that it comes in two halves which are far from made to fit together. The ball and socket joints which join the halves aren't even lined up correctly, but it's not quite a fatal flaw as it only has a couple gaps when glued together which can be fixed before painting starts. The dire rat is passable, but I'm not a fan of extra items on a monster figure, such as the treasure chest this one is on. I have no air bubbles in my set. Overall, this set is worth the money although most of the figures are fairly small and require a good amount of preparatory work before you pick up a paintbrush.

Nice starter set of monsters, but,,

the ogre is going to need some work to get the arms to fit properly. Orc shipped seperate from his/her shield, which must be glued on. Displacer beast needs some work to get proper fit as well. Goblins are nice, with spears and shields. Dire rat is on a chest, with a skull next to the chest. Nice touch. This is a decent set (I bought two), and contains some of the early monsters characters run against. Would be nice to see some kobolds and skeletons added to another set.

Not even in the same ball park as Ral Partha Miniatures,

First I must say I started Painting miniatures in the late 80s, so it is not like I am new to this or that I am from the great old days of miniatures for war games before Gary and his friends creating D&D. And I have taken a few years off from purchasing miniatures. But after buying some Partha miniatures from ironwindmetals and then these wotc I must say wotc has not impressed me. While the plastic bases have never been my thing at least the parth ones made in the late 90s fit into their bases correct these wotc miniatures are either way to small or a few are so fat that I thought about getting out a grinder instead of a file. While the flash was excessive on a few it really is easy to remove so I would not complain to wotc about it. But hear this wotc if you can't even ship a Mialee figure in the box like the art work on the back and the displacer beast comes cut in halves that don't come together even close and the ogre's arm won't fit into its socket and I get an extra nameless drow but no halfdragon mage to name just a few problems you need to fix something or you deserve less than one star!

Nice collection, with a caveat,

This is a good collection of miniatures to start out with. The selection is well chosen, and you get plenty of figures for the price. Unfortunately, I found that most of them had extra bits of metal (called flash) that needed to be removed before they looked right. Also, a small error on the ogre figure is going to require some careful cutting to fix. However, the figures themselves are very nice and detailed, especially the orc and ogre. If you want a good way to start your collection, pick up this box.
