Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS-K-Bloblike monsters in primary hues energetically scribble, mix, dance, wiggle, and otherwise enjoy playing with color. Each creature makes a statement about what its color stands for, without any particular logic: why red is the color of snore, yellow the color of growl, and blue the color of nibble are not explained. The primary colors offer to make new ones for some little gray monsters and produce orange, green, and purple in turn. On the final page, they pull together a rainbow, but while the colors are in the proper order in the word rainbow, the illustration shows red followed by yellow, not orange. Better books that describe the color-mixing process include Ellen Stoll Walsh's Mouse Paint (Harcourt, 1989) and Arnold Lobel's The Great Blueness and Other Predicaments (Harper & Row, 1968).-Grace Oliff, Ann Blanche Smith School, Hillsdale, NJα(c) Copyright 2011. From Booklist

Take four little gray monsters, introduce them to three bigger monsters who are bright blue, intense red, and shiny yellow, and your result is a joyously messy lesson in primary colors. The colorful monster trio keeps asking their gray friends the same question: “What new favorite color can we make for you?” Following each reply, the bigger monsters show how mixing two primary colors can result in the magic of a new color, and the gray monsters are thereby transformed. Taking a cue from the bigger beasts, the little ones splash around in the colors like kids splashing in puddles. They scribble with crayons and slop paints, and these wild bursts of color fill the book, both endorsing and giving an object lesson in coloring-outside-the-lines experimentation. The book ends in a several-page explosion of color—until a rainbow appears to set things (sort of) straight again. About as much fun as monsters, or kids, can have learning their colors. Grades K-1. --Connie Fletcher

I love books that teach colors. This book teaches the colors, and it also teaches how you can make colors by mixing colors. You have the main monsters, and they each have a color they just love: Red, Yellow, and Blue. Each one has a favorite color for a different reason. For example, "Red is the color of Roar! and SNORE!" (Yup, it has rhyming words too!) Then there are the gray monsters that want to be colors also. How do you make orange? Just mix red and yellow. The problem is there are four gray monsters and only 3 colors you make by mixing colors. What will happen to the smallest gray monster? The answer wasn't exactly what I expected, and it made me say "awe." It was very adorable!

The monsters definitely reminded me of Yo Gabba Gabba. That will surely appeal to many children. Also, kids just seem to like monsters. With the bright colors and squiggly lines, the illustrations are perfect. The rhyming text and fun words like "squish" and "squash" make it fun to read as well. The extra step of teaching how secondary colors are made is a bonus and a way to make the book helpful for older preschool children as well. A book that teaches, is appealing to kids, and makes the parents feel good inside is always a win.

This book is awesome for teaching colors, mixing colors, counting, and giving Dad a chance to turn loose some funny voices. We read this book an average of 4-5 times a week at bed or nap time and it seems to never get old. Your kids will love this book too, unless you suck at story telling, then they may just like it.

Our 2 1/2 year old loves this book! We checked it out from the library on a whim. He likes monsters so it caught our eye. We bought him his own copy after reading the book before nap and before bed. It has been the book he asks for since we had it from the library. My husband joked that we should hide the book, that's how much he wants to read it!
This book has cute illustrations. I like how the color words are in their actual color so my son can "read" along. I also like how it teaches which colors can combine to make new colors.
I've bought the author's other title "Monsters Love School" and am anxious for it to arrive. I will keep buying books by the author.

A delightfully chaotic introduction to colors, Monsters Love Colors provides a short, fun read. With many scribblings reminiscent of preschoolers the monsters declare their love for various colors starting with red, yellow, and blue. Gray monsters gradually decide what colors they want to be and the primary colors mix those colors for them, until the last one. What will he choose when another monster chooses the color he wanted? A creative way to teach children about colors and how mixing the primary colors provides additional colors and how they all combine to create a rainbow. Child tested and librarian approved.

We LOVE this book at our house. There are several color "monsters" (all quite friendly looking) and they love teaching about colors and creating new ones. They show how to create green (from blue and yellow), orange (from red and yellow), and purple (from blue and red) with a series of wiggles, stomps, splashes, dances, and more that my daughter loves to act out. Lots of fun can be had with this book and it's educational!

Illustrations are a lot of fun too- I wouldn't be surpassed if this gets nominated for a Caldecott.

Both my 4 1/2 and 22 month old LOVE this book and ask to read it all the time.

I used to teach music in the ps and so I love to turn books into songs and did just that with this book. My kids love to sing along. It has been great practice for my 4 year old on her color blends. She loves to choose from the primary colors what they are going to make before we turn the page.

Such a cute book, can't wait for more monster titles from this author :)

This is one of the cutest books I have ever seen!!! Each page has such fun words, it's a highly interactive story to enjoy with your little one. Not only do they get to learn colors with adorable monsters, but they learn howling, wiggling, nibbling and lots more.

This book is a "must have" for any little child's library.

Beautiful color. My son loves to draw, and this book is his favourite one not only because of its vibrant color choice, but also this book introduces the concept of mixing different colors to make new colors.
