3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good
I bought and read this book, because I used to live in Connecticut, and it was a "Nutmeg Award" Nominee which is the top children's book in the state as voted by students. I read it and thought it was enjoyable, but nowhere near as fun or interesting or even well-written as his My Teacher.. series. I guess I was expecting a lot, and this book had a lot in it, space...

This is one of the best Bruce Coville Books I've read yet. Children who enjoy adventure stories will like all books by this author.

We recommend this book. It is full of adventure and mystery.

5.0 out of 5 stars Monters of Morley Manor: MUST HAVE!!!!!!!!!!!, April 25, 2004
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Monsters of Morley Manor: A Madcap Adventure (Hardcover)
This book is awesome! I liked it because it was filled with mystery and it's hook was really awesome -- it grabbed me right off. I think anyone over 9 who likes Wrinkle in Time (Madeline L'Engle), So you Want to Be A Wizard (Diane Duane), or other books like that will definitely like this book. This book will keep you wanting more; you'll be sorry when it's done. I hope there's a sequel!

4.0 out of 5 stars Exciting Adventure for Middle Readers, February 17, 2004
By
Erika Sorocco (Southern California, USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Anthony and his younger sister, Sarah, have always dreamed of seeing what Morley Manor holds within it's walls. Of course, everyone in the small town of Owl's Roost, Nebraska, has the same idea. So when Old Man Morley dies, and Morley Manor is bought by a demolition team, everyone in Owl's Roost attends the sale, seeing as everything held under the roof of Morley Manor must go. Anthony has no intention of purchasing anything at the sale, but when Sarah shows him a strange looking box, that she convinces him would be absolutely perfect to hold his trading cards, he realizes that he's never wanted anything so much, and decides to buy it. Once home he breaks open the lock, and finds that the box houses five little monsters. However, Anthony soon finds out that placing any of the five monsters (Ludmilla, Albert, Gaspar, Melisande, and Bob) in water, brings them to life. And bringing them to life, will bring the monsters, Anthony, and Sarah, on all sorts of wild adventures to save the Earth as we know it.

Bruce Coville has created a novel for middle readers (ages 9-12), that will hold their interest, and keep them begging for more, even after their done reading it. The characters of THE MONSTERS OF MORLEY MANOR are exciting, and all have their own quirky personalities, that readers will relish in. Fans of Madeleine L'Engle's TIME QUARTET will find that the adventures that Anthony and Sarah take part in with the monsters, are much like the adventures that Meg, Calvin, and Charles Wallace experience in each of the books in L'Engle's TIME QUARTET. A must-have book for all fans of mystery, paranormal phenomena, and science fiction. You won't be disappointed with THE MONSTERS OF MORLEY MANOR.

I bought and read this book, because I used to live in Connecticut, and it was a "Nutmeg Award" Nominee which is the top children's book in the state as voted by students. I read it and thought it was enjoyable, but nowhere near as fun or interesting or even well-written as his My Teacher.. series. I guess I was expecting a lot, and this book had a lot in it, space travel, monsters, hot monsters, a pet monkey, going to the land of the dead, alien invasions, seperaiton of spirits. You would think it was amazing, but you only get half of the story, the aprt from Anthony's point of view, and from no one else in the story. The book could have been finish in less than 150 pages but lasts until 221 with the epilogue, and then it seems like it stops. It should have been two books, the Epilogue should be longer and tell what has happened in better detail, and the middle of the book should be anywhere else. I liked it, but can not see how it won the Nutmeg, or any award.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Monsters of Morley Manor, March 19, 2006
A Kid's Review
This "Madcap Adventure" is a real adventure.
2 Kids find a box with wooden monsters in it and one of the monsters get water splashed on them. That's where the adventure starts! JUST ADD WATER!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Spine-Tingling, Great Book, January 28, 2004
A Kid's Review
The Monsters of Morley Manor is an excellent book for young readers and old readers alike. I didn't find a lot of books I wanted to read, but my Mom suggested I read this book and it was like a magic portal to reading land. It was exciting the whole time -- it didn't have a long, slow beginning like some books. It had wonderful characters with great personalities and there is so much spine-tingling adventure in it. If I could have given it more stars, I would give it a million.

I read this wonderful book called The Monsters of Morley Manor by Bruce Coville. It's about a boy named Anthony and his sister Sarah, who finds a box in Morley Manor. Once he did it with every monster, he tried to help them save Morley Manor. What I liked about the book is the mystery. I think every reader should read this book because it's interesting and mysterious.

5.0 out of 5 stars Moster of Morley Manor Book Report, November 27, 2005
By
Ji Seong (Shanghia, China) - See all my reviews
This book is about brother and sister trying to save earth from aliens with 5 strange people. At the starting of the book the brother bought the locked box in the Morley Manor. Everything in the Morley Manor were sale because the owner of the Morley Manor the Old Man Morley has died. The neighbors weren't very close to him so they didn't know if he had any relatives. So the Morley Manor was bought from demolition team. When he got back home, he opened the locked box and found 5 dolls inside. Later on by an accident he dropped water to one of the monsters hand which started to move.
What I think of this book is that the author Bruce Coville has very different thinking then others. The world he creates in the book was very fascinating such as, going one planet to another, land of dead, and going into another people's dead body. But one of the things that I was very impressed was few people going into a frog's mouse and talk to it. Talking to an animal is normal for most of science fiction book but going into the animal's mouth is very different from other books.
This book gives us 2 lessons. One is that families and friends are important in your life. Another I wish you read it by your own. It's in the Epilogue p.220~221. They were very impressive for me. I wish they will be very impressive for you.
I wish you read the Monster of Morley Manor.
