5.0 out of 5 stars Monsters "R" Us, October 24, 2008
This review is from: Marvel Monsters (Hardcover)
Let's face it: Marvel's Monsters are a cute bunch. They're more entertaining than terrifying. It's like seeing a bunch of mutated soft toys gone wrong. MARVEL MONSTERS is Marvel's affectionate tribute to the characters that helped keep the comic book company alive once upon a time in the 50s and 60s. I had to get this when I picked it up from the shelves - why? Because I realised that the book was filled with both old AND new takes on the Monsters - the Fin Fang Foom; The Original Hulk; the Devil Dinosaur, etc. Most people might think this was just a compilation of old Monster comics. Well, it's a lot more. Stories like Devil Dinosaur's "The Battle That Time Forgot" show that Marvel's team, above all, knows how to have fun with its monsters. Kitschy? Absolutely. This is a must have for anyone who wants to read bedtime monster tales to their loved ones, without scaring them. (PS includes some classic art from Jack Kirby)

5.0 out of 5 stars Great trip back to the past, September 28, 2011

This review is from: Marvel Monsters (Hardcover)
Remember the good old days when all you had to worry about were gigantic monsters (instead of politicians and Wall Street) bent on destroying mankind? "Marvel Monsters" will take you right back there. Lee, Kirby, Ditko, et al. were geniuses at coming up with critters that were aliens or products of science gone awry or some earthly natural horror lurking in the shadows. Kirby was especially adept at creating monsters straight out of nightmares. "Fin Fang Four" was a treat. I think there was a second installment of "Fin Fang Four" and I wish it had been included. But if you were a fan of Marvel's monster era when you were a kid (as I was), you won't be disappointed. The old material is still fun to read, and the new material manages to be really funny without mocking the once-deadly creatures with the absurd names. Speaking of which, Fin Fang Foom, in his modern incarnation, is worthy of his own series. So buy this book!
