Book Description

In the early days of the global zombie pandemic, Ellen Hale learns a brutal lesson. Sometimes the shambling animated corpses aren’t the worst thing that can happen to you. Sometimes the monsters are human, hiding their thirst for violence behind deceptively benign masks.
While trying to survive the hoards of zombies, Ellen is abducted by a band of marauders and subjected to abuse almost beyond her ability to endure. When she is rescued, she is broken both mentally and physically, and fears she could become a monster herself.
Living at The Compound with a growing band of survivors, she meets Quinn. He seems determined to help her, but he looks like everything she’d ever been taught to fear. How can she trust him, when someone who had appeared so harmless had subjected her to such sadistic horrors? How can she help the teenage captive who was rescued with her, and find her own place in this altered world?
Ellen’s story is one of deep despair and emotional chaos as she fights to regain some of what she’s lost. In the aftermath of captivity, amidst the constant threat of zombie attacks, she must find a way out of the darkness and set foot on the brighter path of hope.
Set in the world of Living With the Dead by Joshua Guess, Monsters Unmasked will make you question the nature of good and evil, monsters and saviors, and how we cope when our entire reality has been changed forever.

5.0 out of 5 stars Had everything... including zombies! July 24, 2011

I've read the book this novella is paired with and I can only say how much I loved it--the author really kept the flavor of Living With The Dead while bringing life to the character of Ellen. Fantastic in a word. Lori Whitwam broke my heart, made me furious and then drove me to tears... this is a solidly great writer with a real talent for getting at your soul.

5.0 out of 5 stars Romantic Zombie Fiction? Who Knew? March 29, 2011
Zombies? You don't like zombies?

Well, that's okay because they don't like you either. But in spite of your mutual dislike, I think you'd both agree on the quality of this wonderfully written novella from Lori Whitman. After all, the zombies aren't the worst monsters in this story, and like all great fiction the story deals with how the situation (in this case the typical zombie apocalypse) affects people on a personal, day-to-day level. The characters, even the horrific ones, come alive in vivid fashion (almost too much in some cases) and make for an incredible read. Fair warning: Make time to finish this in one sitting. You won't want to put it down once you start.

Both emotionally believable, tragic and uplifting, I cannot recommend this novella highly enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars A real gem in the zombie lands May 14, 2011

I have to totally agree with everyones praise, a book with realistic despair and hope, very well written.
A great side to Josh Guess' Living with the dead, but excellent unto itself without any prior knowledge of
the Living with the dead series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Darkness and Light, a perfect blend March 30, 2011

This novella, set in the Living With the Dead universe that I created, is amazing. I mention my work here for full disclosure, so that you don't read this review and then later realize that I also wrote the forward to this piece of work.

Objectively speaking, this is truly astounding fiction. Though the world is mine, the voice and heart of this story belong to the author's unique talent. In reading this novella, you will be stunned by the dark and awful things you'll read. You will tell yourself that human beings couldn't possibly do them, yet the author will paint a picture so real and powerful that you won't be able to avoid accepting the truth: people are capable of acts worse than you can imagine.

But in her main character, Lori also captures the light inside each and every one of us. She has written a survivor who has an innate toughness and pragmatism, yet retains her hope for a brighter and better tomorrow.

Simply a wonderfully written story that will move you in many ways. Some of them good, some of them bad. None of them boring. Enjoy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Much More Than Zombies March 29, 2011
The premise is set in a zombie apocalypse, but if zombies aren't your thing, don't let that put you off. This novella delves much deeper than the flesh-eating monsters we have all come to expect from zombie fiction.

What could happen when your whole world is turned upside down from a cataclysmic event? The most horrible thing that occurs in this well-written novella isn't the fact zombies are taking over the world -- it's what happens in the realm of human nature. It's what happens when the mask of civilization is ripped wide open, and the monsters emerge from the gaping wound.

Ellen finds out just how horrifying that is, and this is the story of her struggle to come to terms with how it affects her life in the post-apocalyptic world created by Joshua Guess. It's dark, terrifying and yet hopeful. Whitwam does a masterful job of exposing the darker side of human nature while documenting the experiences of a woman who undergoes a journey of survival and self-discovery. An excellent tale, skillfully told, that will pluck the heartstrings and leave you with a lot to think about long after you finish the last page. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chaos & heartbreak with monsters March 9, 2012
Disclosure - I received a copy of this from the author.

This is a grim examination of the human monsters that might survive a zombie attack. By page 7 I was horrified - and hooked.

Without giving spoilers, in a fairly short length tale - the book ran to about 40 pages on my kindle - the author manages to pack suspense, outrage, horror, hope and joy into a well-crafted and beautifully written tale, and takes the reader along for the ride.

Recommended for zombie & horror fans, and anyone wondering how the nastier specimens of humanity would react to an all-out disaster.

5.0 out of 5 stars Human Nature Unmasked January 30, 2012

When I first started reading Monsters Unmasked, I was expecting it to be just another zombie melodrama. Yes, I enjoy zombies and the like but this story was different, not at all what I expected. From the first page I was hooked on Whitman's tale about Ellen, her betrayal by someone she knew and a view into pandemic life that never in my wildest nightmares would occur to me. Still the strong, determined heroine didn't give up, she stayed true to herself and through her story I was reminded of the best in human nature.
