MonstrO are a bit of an oddity in the best possible way on their self-titled debut effort. Specifically, they clearly draw from a wide range of influences and are not so easily categorized into a musical soundbyte.

In my first listen I found myself hearing bits of classic rock and 70s radio influence right along with 90s alternative nation and a dose of doom/stoner metal tossed in to keep the listener from getting too comfy and passive. It might sound like an odd mashup but somehow MonstrO pull it together and make an 'album' that is challenging while still being entertaining.

One of the best aspects of the album is that the songs all have a clear and distinct sound giving a complete listen a satisfying feel. Unlike so many bands that really have 3-4 songs and just mix and match parts like Legos to fill out the release, MonstrO put in the work to make a complete offering. Standouts (to me) include: Anchors Up! Concertina; Olympia and Elizabeth although I felt the whole album was good with no tracks I wished to be over.

Bottom line is this is a really good hard rocking disc. Perhaps too clean vocally and not brutal enough for a die-hard metal-head, but don't pass on this if you like traditional rock influence spliced with the best the early 90s had to offer.

Talk about a band that is much more than the sum of it's parts! Monstro should sound like a train wreck with all their disparate pieces being at odds with each other. This is absolutely not the case at all. Their sound is tight and focused, only occasionally flying off the map with odd experimentation. Fans of a poppier metal style like Torche, Saviours, Red Fang, or The Sword should really dig this. However that doesn't mean this sounds like those bands, with the exception of Torche. Monstro explode out of the gate with galloping, downtuned, thunderous riffing, rolling drums, bass-heavy rock and roll with soaring vocal melodies tying the whole album together. It's got moments of Rush, Jane's Addiction, Soundgarden, Pink Floyd, and even Zeppelin, that throw the whole mix of modern metal and pop back into your face with a vintage classic rock grin! Again the cohesive nature of the material is what really draws you in. These are really good songs, with great dynamics, harmonies, hooks and choruses. This is better than most debut albums by a random assortment of musicians has the right to be! Props to this band for creating something original but still heavy enough to gain my attention and keep it throughout. It's not flawless, but it is very good. Way to hit the ground running!

This album is unique, heavy, melodic and mind blowing! I would call it acid metal, but it is so fresh and non-derivative. One of the best new sounds that I have heard in a very long time. I am itching for their next album. What a monstrous debut!!

Monstro's self-titled release is very solid. The first half of the album is killer, with a 60s and 70s inspired sound. I saw these guys live in Las Vegas as an opening act for The Sword and Kyuss. They stole the show. Their album is the same way. A few of the later tracks on the album lag, and as another reviewer has mentioned, the album loses some momentum. However, nothing beats driving around the desert, windows down, blasting Concertina and Anchors Up!

I listen to 1st 4 songs over and over. Great vibe, unique sound, seedy edge. Then goes into slow down mode and loses momentum.
