I purchased this writing instrument in Japan a little under a year ago and out of the small collection of fountain pens I own, it is the one I use the most for my Spencerian style handwriting. The broad nib allows for a smooth and comfortable feel on even the simplest strokes and the girth of the barrel is just right for even someone with smaller hands (such as myself) when writing long letters or taking precise notes. The piston filling system is also much more economical and less dependent on proprietary parts than other fountain pens I've used with cartridges and flexible bladders.

My only complaint would be that the "precious resin" used in the construction of the barrel and cap is rather fragile considering the price. It chips and cracks easily so the utmost care should be taken if it is carried around on your person while working or traveling. Luckily Mont Blanc will repair any component for a fraction of the cost (about 1/3) of a complete replacement, so it's not too much of a problem even if you do happen to let it drop to the floor from desk height or push the cap down too firmly onto the barrel before writing.

Also, as it is a luxury item it is best to follow the instructions given by the manufacturer regarding what inks ought to be used. Although it is possible to use other branded inks (such as Pilot) small factors such as the shape of the inkwell and minute differences in the composition of the inks can cause some problems with build-up of particulates that may negatively effect the pen's ink flow. This problem is easily solved by taking it to a Mont Blank store for cleaning (which is a free service), but I imagine it would be better these days to save time and money to just buy the proper ink in the first place.

Mont Blanc lives up to its great reputation with this pen. Delivers the ink and writes very smoothly. An excellent tool.

This pen is the real deal and is exactly as advertised. Montblanc pens tend to lay down alot of ink and this medium nib was perhaps a bid broader than expected. this helps to reduce scratchiness when writing, but if you want fine lines i suggest you go with a FINE nib

Bottom Line Up Front:
I cannot comment on how it writes, since a good store (or Montblanc store) will never let you write with a nib that isn't yours. However, I can comment on its weight and overall construction quality. I have researched as much as I could, within reason, on this pen to include visiting 2 stores to hold the pen. Here are my thoughts.

Overall Construction Quality:
Very solid feel. Although light in touch, it did not feel like it was going to break. I appreciated the detailed stamping on the nib, the serial numbers marked into the cap. When I unscrewed the cap to expose the nib, I felt every thread gripping the cap tightly as I screwed the cap back on the top of the pen. The pen did not once have a feel of wiggling, loose play, or that it was making random noises.

Starting at the nib, you can notice the fine designs. Make sure to note if it has "SOD" on the nib, if you are using special materials. Also note if the designs are stamped or engraved onto the nib. Montblancs are always stamped, never engraved. Screwing on/off caps and nib assembly always had the nice and tight thread feel. Unlike some other brands, this cap stays on nice and barely adds any weight or heft to the pen. I appreciated the small windows in the resin, where you can see if ink levels are low inside. Although a bit dark, I felt this was a nice detail in the pen so that you are not guessing if there is ink.

Weight and Size:
My hands are rather large, given my 5'8" height. I have a 6'1" wing span, and my hands can reach 1 octave plus 2 keys easily on a piano. In numerical terms, the tip of my writing hand's pinky to the thumb is 9.5 inches. My middle finger is measured at 3.75 inches starting at the webbing of my fingers.

Superb pen - My favorite in my collection. Excellent price and an excellent writer. Smooth nib, generous flow of ink, classic style and a platinum trim. This pen automatically replaced my daily pen - a Pelikan M800. Also like this one better than my Montblanc 149.
