Book Description

Insiders Guide December 1, 2005
What is the only Montana newspaper to win a Pulitzer Prize? Which are more numerous in Montana-humans or cows? Which county produced the most barley-6,955,000 bushels-in 1995? How many Montanans does it take to make a pet cremation urn? Who's won more Big Sky Conference championships in football-the Grizzlies or the Bobcats? Where was General Thomas Meagher, acting governor of Montana Territory from 1865-67, last seen before he mysteriously disappeared? These and thousands of other questions are answered in Montana Almanac by Andrea Merril, a former legislative researcher, and Judy Jacobson, the former state senator from Butte who ran for lieutenant governor and governor in 1996. Readers will find Montana Almanac an indispensable fact book that should grace the shelves of every Montana household, office, classroom, and library. These 504 pages contain 189 tables and graphs, 27 maps, 135 photographs, 75 biographical sketches of notable Montanans, and mountains of facts on Montana-its history, people, natural treasures, weather, government, education, media, agriculture, business, roadways, sports, recreation, and arts. A comprehensive index puts all this information at your fingertips.

Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

Montana Almanac delivers the facts - thousands and thousands of them - on Big Sky Country:
Early prospectors sluicing for gold cursed the sapphires that clogged their equipment.
In 1904 the girls basketball team from Fort Shaw Indian School defeated all challengers at the St. Louis World's Fair and were declared "Champions of the World."
The beaverslide haystacker revolutionized haying when it was invented in the Big Hole Valley a century ago.
Montana Republican Jeannette Rankin was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1916, four years before the Twentieth Amendment gave women the right to vote.
In 1995 Wheat Montana Farms & Bakery of Three Forks set a world record for cutting wheat from the field and turning it into a loaf of bread - 8 minutes, 13 seconds.
Completely revised and updated by lifelong Montana resident Andrea Merrill-Maker, Montana Almanac is a mountain of information. With this one book, long-time Montanans and newcomers alike can become steeped in Montana's history and people, natural treasures, sports and outdoor recreation, business and agriculture, arts and culture, and travel spots that any self-respecting Montanan ought not to miss.

4.0 out of 5 stars A treasure on the Treasure State., September 14, 2006
By
A. Reum (Montana, USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Montana Almanac, 2nd (Insiders Guide) (Paperback)
This Montana Almanac is a fine volume chock full of facts and notable faces and places. Nearly every detail of life and history in Montana lies, like the treasure richly strewn acrossed this state, within the pages of Montana Almanac.

One fine addition over other books is the county by county hilights. Every county seat and at least one notable historical fact are mentioned and mapped.

What's the weather like? Where did the notables live? Where to visit and vacation? Mining for saphires? Tallest mountains? Coldest temps and deepest snow? It's all here!
