Molly Cogan was doing everything she could to cope on her own in the big city. Her husband left her and her two sons a couple of years ago. When he gets jailed for fraud for stealing from his clients, the child support payments are cut off and she and her sons now live in shame for what her exhusband did. When Sam Dakota, the foreman of her grandfather's ranch in Montana, calls to tell her that Gramps is dying, Molly quits her job, sells what she can and moves to the ranch to spend what time she can with Gramps. When Molly and the boys get to the ranch, she is shocked to see how run down it's gotten since the last time she was there. Molly begins to try to put things in order but it's not easy. The bank will not lend them any money to operate on and someone is trying to sabotage the ranch. When Gramps and Molly find out that Sam is looking for jobs elsewhere when Gramps dies, they try to get him to stay. Gramps finally offers Sam part of the ranch if he'll marry Molly. Molly is a fiesty heroine. Sam is the kind of hero I like, strong but yet considerate of Molly. The secondary characters are very colorful and well developed. The story is excellant with alot of twists and turns.

MONTANA was my first experience with Debbie Macomber, but I can guarantee it won't be my last. I enjoyed this book and got caught up in the storyline right at the beginning. After that it was a fast trip to the last page. Now I have to find some more Macomber books to read.

A good and easy read!,

Montana is a novel I couldn't put down until the very last page. The author skillfully mixes a single mother of two boys, a ranch foreman who is ashamed to have served a term in the state pen in with a dying grandfather, a fanatical group of militia like those at Ruby Ridge in with a lawyer who is in love with a prostitue and comes up with a very belivable story. A Montana family ranch is going belly up. Rustlers are trying to make the owner sell until the foreman pulls some suprising tricks that makes the story end like Roman candles on the Fourth of July. This is a Zane Gray thriller set in modern times! You won't be sorry you bought this book.

Her break-out book is terrific,

This review is from: Montana (Mass Market Paperback)
After divorcing her spouse, Molly and her two sons had to cope with the intense scrutiny of the community when her former husband was convicted of defrauding the elderly. After that humiliation, Molly feels she will never trust a man again. This, of course, doesn't include her two boys and her grandfather, Walt, the owner of the Broken Arrow Ranch in Montana. When the ranch foreman, Sam Dakota calls her to tell her that Walt is dying, Molly pulls up roots and, accompanied by her two sons, moves to Montana. It is important to Walt to know that Molly and the boys will be safe and secure after he dies. He maneuvers his granddaughter and his foreman into a marriage of convenience that quickly turns into a love match. However, Molly's faith in her new spouse is quickly shaken when she learns that Sam is an ex-con. Her doubts are further fostered by a militia group, who want possession of the ranch, even if it means resorting to violence to accomplish their objective. MONTANA is one of Debbie Macomber's best works to date, which is saying a lot when one considers how good the author has been over the years. At the heart of this dramatic epic is two scarred and lonely souls, who fear trusting anyone. When they meet, passion flows, but neither want to see where it leads to because they are afraid of the pain involved when a commitment ismade.. Readers will be thoroughly entertained as they observe the pair suffers through mental agonies to hide from the truth. Ms. Macomber imbues heart and soul into this terrific tale that will please her myriad of fans. Harriet Klausner

I am a huge fan of Debbie, have read most of her books. She can be repeditive but this book really
kept my interest and she actually got more graphic and threw in some intensity that you don't normally read in her books. LOVED IT and couldn't put it down!! Especially at the very end!!! (don't peek, LOL)

Not worthy of being a hardcover,

This is the story of a single mother and her two sons and the move home to Montana that they make. There she meets the foreman of her grandfather's ranch and sparks fly. Neither Molly or Sam wants to admit that they are attracted to each other, but the grandfather can tell. He offers Sam land and cattle to stay and marry Molly because once Gramps dies Molly will not be able to work the land on her own. Gramps dies and Molly and Sam realize that they do love each other although there are many hurdles to overcome-the loan payment, the children ,their pasts and the mysterious accidents. I found this book to be cliched-I knew how the money situation would be resloved. I also knew who the "secret" bad guy was. I did enjoy the style of writing as everyone's thought were given. This book is a typical romance. No better and no worse.
