Book Description

Montana Dreams is a western historical romance set in the Big Sky Country of Montana. Ben Poole has endeared himself to Rose Langue, owner of the Golden Sun in Virginia City, Montana. An orphan and veteran of the Civil War, he lives wild and free; sleeps on the ground and is an armed guard for a freight wagon owned by Reed and Tressie Bannon from Montana Promises. That wild freedom comes to an skidding halt the minute he discovers a collapsed Dessa Fallon and carries her back to his wilderness cabin.
Summoned by her parents, Dessa is on her way to Virginia City where they have found a clue to the whereabouts of her missing brother Mitchell. Outlaws attack the stage, kill the driver and guard and drag its only passenger to their lair in Alder Gulch. When they get drunk, Dessa escapes and stumbles through the rugged countryside until she passes out.
In a nearby cabin, Ben and his friend Wiley, hear her feeble cries and Ben fetches her. He promptly leaves her to the care of Wiley, and the next day they take her into town where she learns that the mercantile her parents bought has burned and they died in the fire.
Ben immediately takes a distraught Dessa to Rose Langue's house of ill repute where she is put to bed by the sympathetic madame.
Unraveling the tangle of intrigue surrounding her brother Mitchell's survival of the war and avoiding men eager to take over her fortune and her parents' business, Dessa has no one to turn to except the rugged Ben Poole and the tender-hearted Rose Langue.
While the attraction between the couple grows, a mix of outlaws and villainous city slickers threaten the their happiness. To further complicate matters, Ben must decide if a man who only feels free in the wilderness of the mountains wants to be tamed by a woman accustomed to wealth and an easy life. Dessa gows to love the Montana countryside, but the city beckons and she wonders if she can learn to live that rugged life?
Ben and Dessa travel from the danger of outlaw dens to an exciting journey by train into her world where the villains don't carry weapons but are dangerous just the same. Can they find happiness together or will their differences tear them apart forever?
The Union Pacific Railroad has cut its way across the great plains to Promontory, Utah. There the driving of the golden spike signifies the joining of the East Coast to the West by iron rails. For the first time travelers can more easily move from one end of the country to the other and a new era has begun. But the rails bypassed Virginia City and gold played out in Alder Gulch. Can the town survive?
Go with Ben and Dessa on their exciting adventures, and meet Dessa's mysterious brother Mitchell Fallon. You'll want to follow him into the final book of the trilogy, Montana Destiny.

Editorial Reviews

"...a believable atmosphere and a finely crafted story with elements of a mythical journey and memorable characters." Four Stars Romantic Times

From the Author

When I wrote the Montana books I wanted desperately to visit the state, but at the time we didn't have the money. We had bought land in Arkansas and became some of that group of people who escaped the busy life, what we then called a rut, and turned to living off the land. Of course, we all know that no one can live without an income of some sort, but we settled for very little. We grew our own vegetables, had a few head of cattle for milk and beef, raised chickens and rabbits and even a hog.
So I visited Montana in the only way I knew. Through research. I learned so much about the state that by the time the third book was finished I felt I had been there. My characters continued to live in my mind long after I finished each book. This is the second of the Montana books, which aren't really a series. They are only tied together by one minor character or more who move into the next book to become the major characters. By the time I had finished this book, I had fallen madly in love with Mitch Fallon, and you'll become involved with him in the next book, Montana Destiny.
Since these books are from a back list, they have been published as paperbacks and thus had a readership there. With no Internet or email available at the time, my readers were those who read reviews in magazines like Romantic Times and they bought books at the many bookstores.
Today, we see a new world for writers and readers that is developing at lightning speed. I hope to reach many new readers as my books are published to Kindle. Since the original publication of these books I have been able to visit Montana and Wyoming twice, and it is every bit as beautiful and awe-inspiring as I hoped it would be.

5.0 out of 5 stars I liked the western setting and historical aspect November 8, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I've never read a so called "romance novel" before but this one was surprisingly well done and enjoyable. I liked the western setting and historical aspect. A cut above.
I'll check out her other offerings.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Big Sky Country Western Romance August 24, 2013
By E. B.
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Montana Dreams begins with Dessa Fallon, a woman used to luxuries, enduring a stagecoach journey to Virginia City, Montana on a summons from her parents who have recently located there. An only child, following the death of her brother in the Civil War, she is due to inherit the prosperous business her father has left in the hands of the man who would marry Dessa. Used to what some consider the finer things of life, like her intended, and some consider suffocating and constricting, like Ben Poole whom she will soon meet, a sort of adoptive son of a good-hearted saloon and brothel owner, Dessa Fallon is about to have her world turned upside down.
For those who love historical romances, this will fit the bill. Brotherton interweaves a mystery, and characters like Land, a blood-thirsty killer, and sweet Maggie who is like a sister to Ben and to whom he credits in helping him adjust when his boyhood is shattered by the horror of his mother and sister's deaths. Ben lives his days in guilt and remorse, feeling responsible for the death of a married man with small children, and as a veteran of the Civil War, with the memories of the atrocities of that war.
Drawn to each other, if Dessa and Ben are to find happiness together, they must seek a way to bring together their far different worlds.

I really enjoyed this book. I guess once again I've read one out of sequence, so I've definitely got to go and read the other two.

Velda Brotherton writes western prose as rich in history and adventure as the Big Sky country across which it arcs. Montana Dreams is a read-late-into-the-night, can't-put-it-down tale.

More About the Author

Velda Brotherton has a long career in historical writing, both fiction and nonfiction. Her love of history and the west is responsible for the publication of 25 books and novels since 1994. But she's not about ready to stop there. When the mid-list crisis hit big city publishers, she turned first to writing regional nonfiction, then began to look at the growing popularity of small presses as a source for the books that continue to flow from her busy mind. Those voices simply won't shut up, and so she finds them a home.

First she obtained a conversion of rights for her out-of-print historical romances and published all six to Kindle. Within a matter of months, she placed a western historical romance, Stone Heart's Woman, with The Wild Rose Press, an award winning publisher of both print and E books; then a mainstream paranormal, Wolf Song, was accepted by SynergE Books.

Not satisfied that her career might level off, she produced an audio book of Montana Promises along with Jeff Justus. The Montana series is also available as a boxed set. A novella, The Legend of the Rose, based on the true story of Cimarron Rose, is available on Kindle. Stone Heart's woman is also available in audio.

While Wild Rose Press continues to publish her western romances, including Wilda's Outlaw: The Victorians, and the second in the series, Rowena's Hellion, in a change of pace, the press published her Vintage love story, Once There Were Sad Songs. The most thrilling experience in her writing career came when Oghma Creative Media contracted her book, Beyond the Moon, a story she has treasured since its first writing in 1985, and signed her to a four-book contract. One is to reprint the Ozark cookbook containing recipes from her mother's collection and stories of growing up in Arkansas during the depression,

The most fun she's had came when owner/designer of Oghma Creative Media, Casey Cowan, suggested a new brand. Sexy Dark and Gritty so well fits her writing style that it was quickly adopted.

This busy writer who has co-chaired a large weekly critique group since 1988, also gives two yearly all-day workshops and mentors promising young writers, plus teaches at conferences in a four-state area. She isn't sure what will come next. With all those voices in her head, she's bound to let some of them out to play before long.
