This is well a written book with good maps and great pictures. The author explains details about the personalities of each river. I bought it to educate myself about Montana's various fly fishing opportunities. It's focused on the main rivers. If you're interested in the mountain lakes or remote rivers, this is not your book. If you're looking for details of the drive too river fisheries, this is it.

Ben Romans knows fly fishing, and he knows Montana, in spades. Whether you are planning a trip, or live in Big Sky Country and want to know the real skinny, watershed by watershed, this is a valuable primer. It's all about substance, written in very clear, concise language. The book is organized in a way that facilitates ready reference, but the writing is also informative and entertaining. It's a remarkable work, made possible by many hard miles rolled and waded throughout the state... its authenticity/credibility simply could not be manufactured by research and interviews alone.

You never know what you might get in a fishing book, but this one hit the mark in detail! I was pleasantly surprised at the beautiful color photos, the details on fishing locations, and especially the maps included within the pages. I appreciate the author's (Ben Roman) inclusion of local guides comments and expertise in fishing the various rivers and waterways; these tips are invaluable. Clear, color photos of the many flies, as well as tying details, helps even the most basic fly tier wrap duplicates of these essential flies. Directions to the water's access is a bonus as the author includes route numbers, landmarks, and other identifiers to help you locate some of the best fishing waters. Glad I took a chance and purchased this book, it's worth every penny!

My son used this book on our 2013 vacation. He found it informative and easy to follow. Fishing is Montana isn't as easy as the books make it sound. It takes area knowledge and experience to catch the big ones. To find out what flies are working for the time, it's a good idea to stop in at a local fly shop. Those guys all fish regularly and know specifics for the time of year depending on the temperature and water levels.
