Okay, so I've been following Monte Montgomery for almost 10 years, and I own everything he's recorded, and a bunch of bootlegs besides. I've seen him live 8 times (which is a lot if you don't live in a common spot for him to visit, and I don't...). That being said, the one thing some people find is that they just don't "get" it until they see him live. It's the most amazing thing ever. If you get the chance...see him. Now, this new CD captures everything you need to know about Monte, so you can appreciate him even before you see him live. It's a culmination of everything he's ever done, stylistically, and by presentation, all in one disc. What I mean is, you get the great studio sound, solid fresh songwriting, a new version of an old song, a cover, and the live feel of a show, all in one studio release. I've already listened through it multiple times, and it's just early evening on the day of release, and I love it!!! Start to finish. Buy this album, and go see Monte live!!!!

Well, my "Monte Montgomery story" is pretty simple: My friend, who has no idea what it means to be a good musician, what good music is, any of that... he was the one who told me to get some Monte. Kinda shameful. I waited for at least a year. Then I bought "Mirror" and watched YouTube videos and... oh snap. I had the epiphany.

This man is an absolute show stealer. If I was a headlining show and he opened for me, I wouldn't play; I'd be to embarrassed. Plain and simple. He's soooooo unbelievably talented and sooooo humble and soooo original. He's got emotions and he's got a way to put them out there for people to relate to. Too bad he won't be in Denver any time soon.

My favorite number of his is still "When Will I," but I bought this album for a now-close-second favorite: "Could Have Loved You Forever." I watched a video of him and his band doing a live take of this in the studio and was awe-struck. Also on this album, "River" (the opener), "Let's Go," and "Moonlight Tango" all have nice Monte kick to them. And, of course, "Little Wing" is a display of raw talent. The way they enter with the drums and bass is frickin' phenomenal.

If you've ever been recommended to hear Monte, just sit down, shut up, and and listen. He's in my Top 5, and he ought to be in yours. (Cue the "High Fidelity" fans and haters.)

Monte is the full deal..singer, songwriter, but more than anything an amazing guitarist. This release is on a new label for Monte, and it does contain a few re-arranged songs from his earlier releases, but it is simply solid. The best way to experience this genius is to see him live. In any event, this album again shows the versatility of this artist. You will not be disappointed with this disc.

I heard "River" recently on the local free-form hippie station, and had to pull my car into a parking lot to take it all in. As I looked at the radio in astonishment the noise that came out sounded like what might have happened if John Fogerty had invited Rory Gallagher and Larry Coryell along on a collaboration album, and thrown in a production job worthy of Zep's stadium chest pounders. After I removed my jaw from my lap and put it in its usual place I bought the CD; glad I did. I couldn't listen to anything but this cut for about two weeks, and finally managed to bring myself to listen to the rest of it; this wasn't a bad idea either.

For the uninitiated, MM seems to be a specialist in acoustic guitar, but that doesn't mean he plays James Taylor wimp stuff. He plays with a lot of electronics, at blazing speed, and applies the resulting sound to Texas-style roadhouse music. This is the obvious, logical Next Step, and I'm amazed nobody thought of it before.

I have two strong reservations: he could use an editor to go over the lyrics with him because they'll sometimes wander into the pseudophilosophical; more important, he should read Rory's last interview in "Guitar Player,"in which The Master remarked that the art of coming up with a great solo was figuring out which notes NOT to play. My guess is that MM may soon reach the point where, if he's not careful, he'll start recording what's essentially the same solos on every song.

That said, I think MM's CD is about the freshest, most invigorating stuff I've heard since I discovered James McMurtry.

Monte is the perfect balance of rough and rowdy yet tender and insightful. So, Let's Go:

1. River - Great way to start. A rumbling tune showcasing his guitar prowess.

2. Let's Go - This song is performed as a powerhouse on "At Workplay" which is my preferred version to this more acoustic arrangement.

3. Everything About You - Playful and romantic, this tune is "radio ready" as it gets into your head. Love the syncopation and melody.

4. Company You Keep - Great lyrics and a really charging tune.

5. Love's Last Holiday - This is gooood. Monte at his woeful best.

6. Moonlight Tango - This should have been a hit the moment it aired. This song just makes you want to get up and starting dancing - with someone.

7. Can't Fool Everyone - A tune that barrels forward like an out of control locomotive. Memorable guitar licks.

8. Could've Loved You Forever - Great melody and lyrics without falling into sappiness.

9. Be Still - Good song and enjoy the more subtle "torquing" of Monte's voice that is his signature.

10 and 12. How Far and Midlife Matinee - Two very well written and performed songs. Leave it to Monte to come up with great metaphors.

11. Little Wing - A classic, of course. This is not my preferred arrangement. It comes off more calamitous than pure.

The influences I hear on this CD are Derek and the Dominoes and Daryl Hall but make no mistake, this is quintessential Monte. Why he doesn't have a wider audience boggles the mind.
