Approximately halfway down the state of California, and directly on the wildest stretch of coastline, lies the Monterey Bay area, a jewel in a glittering crown. Even though it's becoming more and more popular each year, with such places as Carmel and Hearst's Castle besieged by tourists, this entire area remains open for exploration and solitary enjoyment. The author clearly has a love of the region, which she skillfully conveys to her readers; her paragraphs are full of personal humor and insights rather than travelog details. There's a lot of information here, from tidepool ecology to Indian history to backpacking tips. A "best buy" for all public libraries.
