Spinosad is really quite revolutionary (I suggest doing a wikipedia search, so you know EXACTLY what you are getting).

It is completely harmless to pets, children, and plants. Unlike many pesticides you can spray this heavily on leaves and roots with zero negative effects. It works wonders on most insects.

One note of caution: after being mixed with water it is only effective for 24 hours, so only mix as much as you will need per application. Anything left over will be waste. This bottle is a concentrate that will last you a very, very, very long time.

Even kept in a dark, cool environment the concentrate in this bottle will only last 2 years, so you may want to get a slightly smaller quantity, but it was a perfect amount for me as I have a food forest and permaculture garden,

The spinosad organic spray had no effect on Mexican bean beetles when used as directed, even though they are one of the listed control insects. However, it was very effective against the Colorado potato beetle. After one spraying, the potato beetle larva were dead and have not returned. I had to use pyrethrin dust for the bean beetles and Neem oil for flea beetles.

I purchased this product to continue my transition to a more nearly organic approach to pest control in my garden (I still resort to Malathion for certain pests). Now, after two thirds or so of the season is behind me, I want to put in my report.

I used the Monterey Spinosad product on vegetables (squash, eggplant, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, and okra), fruits (primocane raspberries before flowering, apples, plums--both Japanese and European Gage varieties, quince, peach, black currants, red currants, and gooseberries), and one ornamental--hollyhocks.

I used a 2 gallon RoundUp pump sprayer set to deliver almost a mist and followed the directions carefully about making sure the product remained well mixed and never saw a single sign of burning on any of the plants, including those with new growth, which was effectively all of them, including the various fruits (I mention this here because it was a complaint of one user).

When applying it to flowering plants, I tried to spray well after sunset, but even so at times I did notice a few pollinating insects were still active (the product is said to be safe for bees once it has been dry for thirty minutes). That said, the number and kinds of insect pollinators now out in my garden is amazing. I was watching yesterday as a honeybee tried to get into three pumpkin blossoms in succession, before finding one with some room (the first two had three and four bumblebees respectively, the third only one). I should note that until late June I had not seen a single honeybee anywhere in my garden, but now there are many of them out and about. They really seem to love the Cleomes or Spider flowers.

Some bad news: Spinosad is not effective against all insect pests. Shocking, right?

This product was very effective in stopping all damaging pests while keeping helpful pests alive. The bees working my plants continued to work them without interruption. Spray the product at sundown and it will wipe out all the bad plant eaters. I applied two treatments. Had I known about this product earlier in the year I could have saved the majority of the squash plants I had to destroy because of multiple worm issues. This is also the safest insecticide you can buy. I base that statement on many years as a professional pest control technician.

This is one organic product that really works on fire ants!! I live in the land of Fire Ants- I have tried many other organic products and this is the only one I would recommend.

Spinosad is a great insecticide for the right critters but remember that it needs to be ingested to be effective (by the bugs, not you :). It is not a contact killer. Use on thrips, leaf miners, caterpillars, etc. It can be used as a spray and can be mixed with a wetting agent or a mild dish soap and used as a soil drench. When using as a drench, it will typically raise PH, so it is important to adjust accordingly. I will break into Spinosad products before turning to heavier hitting insecticides because it is a more natural product and is considered to be organic. It should be effective within 1-3 days. You may need to reapply several times for complete effectiveness. If you do not see the first signs of results within 72 hours, you more than likely have a bug Spinosad can't help with and it is time to change attack strategies.

The Monterey brand is a good all around brand. Their formulas are effective and their pricing point is very good. Compared to hydro store and grow specific products, the Monterey brand line-up tends to be more effective and much cheaper.

In the past few years, our Southern California garden has been infested with a new kind of leaf minor that attacks the new leaves. The leaves curl, and the underside has a pattern that looks like slug slime. We talked to a lot of garden experts and the only thing that appears to work against these bugs is Spinosad. We have tried a few products with Spinosad and this one is our favorite. It is also eco-friendly and doesnt harm the fruit...you just wait several days after application before harvesting. The only drawback is that this bug doesnt really go away so you need to re-apply every few months.
