Book Description

Architecture July 2002
This volume explores the main aspects of Maria Montessori's theory of education, focusing primarily on the learning materials that are so critical to carrying out her philosophy. In four detailed essays and a number of short, explanatory texts, the book explores: the architectural and aesthetic importance of Montessori classrooms; the effect they had on the lives of children in pre-World War II Germany; how the Montessori method blended with the culture and politics of that era; and how it is employed in schools today. The book features a brief biography of Maria Montessori and original photographs of active children in the the first Montessori schools in Germany, Austria and America.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

A classic Montessori School classroom is a place of serenity, order and calm, where children can move about independently, choosing their activities from shelves of specially designed blocks, beads, puzzles, and other equipment. In four detailed essays and a number of short explanatory texts, this book explores the architectural and aesthetic importance of these classrooms; the effect they had on the lives of children in pre-WWII Germany; how the Montessori method blended with the culture and politics of that era; and how it is employed in schools today. A brief biography of Maria Montessori and many never before published photographs of active children in early Montessori schools make this a unique contribution to the literature of an important and popular educational movement.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unique and interesting perspective on Montessori education, December 2, 2002

This review is from: Montessori: Educational Material for Early Childhood and Schools (Hardcover)
As a longtime Montessori educator, it is rare to come across something that lets me see Montessori and Montessori education from a fresh new perspective. A German manufacturer of children's furntiure was going through its warehouses in preparation for opening a museum of the history of children's furniture. They discovered several crates, which turned out to be full of Montessori furniture and materials from just before WWII. This led to this book, which is an examination mainly of the design elements and philosophy of both the materials and the school environments. This book is published with German and English side-by-side, and contains many great photos.
