With the fiftieth anniversary of the March on Washington in recent memory, it's amazing to think of how far we've come as a nation in regards to racial equality. My grandmother worked in the Civil Rights Movement in Philadelphia to help organize for equal rights, and she fought racism through her life. I think it's difficult for the newest generation to even understand what people like my grandmother went through, and this book really does a wonderful job of *literally* illustrating the obstacles and triumphs that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. went through in helping to bring his dream to life. I enjoyed the clear, engaging writing style and the illustrations really bring this book to life. This is an excellent resource for people of all ages looking to learn more about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and I think it would make an excellent addition to the classroom as well. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Book August 9, 2013
This is a great example of how skill, dedication and hard work can bring to life the faded treasures of the past. The story of Martin Luther King is told here with illustrations reworked from the original 1957 comic. The result is a dignified, thought-provoking reminder of the peaceful struggle against racial discrimination. Also included is a chapter on Mahatma Gandhi and his campaign for freedom in India in 1919. A fascinating book for many reasons, and very well worth reading.

A great illustrated book about M.L. King's quest for peace. Excellent read for kids about the progress that was made in society since the fifties regarding racism, thanks to a man of quality and high spiritual values. Julia Bush reminds us the highlights of the life of this peaceful leader. I can only recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best of both worlds August 13, 2013
Verified Purchase
When I was a boy, some of my favorite comics were a series of comics that each told a little piece of history. I have always wanted to go back and find them. Well, Julia Busch is giving me the next best thing. She calls them retro-comics and each one tells a story from history like this one is about Martin Luther King. I love these books. They combine a good story that is true and include drawings from old comics. This is the best of both worlds.

5.0 out of 5 stars Martin Luther King Set a Great Example August 1, 2013

This story is beautifully illustrated and a must read. I found it both inspiring and educational. The story ties in with Ghandi's struggle to free India from the British Empire, another great leader. This book will make you think and reflect on the progress we've made as a nation. An excellent source for home schooling and school teachers. I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Historic Comic August 3, 2013
Verified Purchase
The author has brought to life a historic comic from the 50's for us to reflect and learn from. She has carefully restored a treasure from the past that could have been lost to us. The book is inspirational as well as educational. The comic was originally written during the time that these events were transpiring. It recounts the Rosa Parks story, the struggle for civil rights reform in the 50's, Rev. King’s sermon on Mahatma Gandhi, and the power of nonviolent civil disobedience.

A book to be shared with your children and grandchildren. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Julia did it again!! August 22, 2013

I really appreciate being able to read Julia's retro comics. It is great to be able to be reminded of just why we have national holidays, streets and monuments named after these great men, even though today their message seems to get lost. Thank you Julia for reproducing this gem.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Book Based On A Vintage Comic... August 17, 2013
Verified Purchase
This book is based on a vintage comic that was printed closer to the time that these events happened. Since the pictures are taken from the original comic, the images are a little blurry. However, I was presently surprised by the fact that the words are as clear as a bell. Clearly the author really put some time into this book, and it shows. It's also a great way to get reacquainted with this period in history. You can see the frustration, desperation and sense of hope missing from today's oversanitized version of history. If you're a history lover, or want to introduce your children to history in a fun, informative way, this book is a must read.
