My boy still plays with it at 14 months. It's very well made - sturdy, pretty - and it makes a very pleasant rattling noise unlike plastic junk from China. The handle is painted, but the rest of the rattle is stained. I do not understand the reason for not staining the handle also, but the paint never chipped during use. I also like that the baby can actually observe how the sounds are being produced.
