3.0 out of 5 stars Great for meal planning, has many reprinted recipes, August 16, 2010
This review is from: Month of Meals: Soul Food (Spiral-bound)
This cookbook and meal guide is part of the Month of Meals series by the American Diabetic Association. The series features themed cookbooks with a spiral binding and segmented pages to help plan a days worth of meals, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Snack suggestions are given near the end of the book. Complete nutrition information including calories and total carbohydrate counts are given for each meal. The format of these cookbooks makes meal planning easy for newly diagnosed diabetics, and provides new meal combinations and ideas for those who are experienced in managing their diabetes.

All of the recipes I tried from the Soul Food collection were very good. I found several new menu ideas in this book. The spiral binding is nice to use while preparing food. The deviled eggs recipe in the snack section are simple and wonderful.

Some of the meal suggestions were based on prepared foods from the store, like canned soups, or even samples of what could be ordered at restaurants. While some may find the meal suggestions useful for planning out their meals, I felt short-changed not getting more recipes. Many of the recipes used in this book are also in The New Soul Food Cookbook for People with Diabetes, also by Roneice Weaver and Fabiola Gaines. If you want nothing but recipes, you may want this book instead. The only real advantage to the Month of Meals: Soul Food book is that it includes so many menu suggestions. I purchased both books, and I am a little disappointed that so many of the same recipes are in both.

Another problem with the book is that many recipes that start on the segmented pages are continued onto pages in the back of the book. Flipping pages while preparing food is inconvenient.

Overall, I really enjoy and frequently use this book. My family eats a lot of Southern style food. The recipes and menu suggestions in this book have helped me to control my gestational diabetes while preparing meals the whole family will enjoy.
