Book Description

He was her childhood knight in shining armor ... but she wasn't a fairytale princess.

Kendall Barclay III was a skinny, nerdy kid when he single-handedly took on a gang of bullies assaulting Laura Shore, a thirteen-year-old girl from the town's most notorious family. The childhood trauma became one more reason for Laura to flee the small Cape Cod town for the opposite coast and make a name for herself there. But now her tyrannical father is dead, her murderous uncle as well, and her beloved sister Corinne wants Laura and their black-sheep brother to come home and restore Shore Gardens, the family nursery fallen to rack and ruin, back to its former charm.

Reluctantly, they promise Corinne one month. One month, for Laura to face down past memories which are anything but fond and to come to terms with the wild range of feelings she has for the man who is no longer either skinny or nerdy. It's a daunting assignment -- made more so when a shocking discovery is made on the nursery grounds. Have knights in shining armor gone out of fashion? Laura will soon find out.

Reviews

"A MONTH AT THE SHORE is a most enjoyable contemporary romance. The book illuminates the power of childhood experiences in shaping lives. Rooted as it is in their past, the attraction that sparks to life between Laura and Ken makes eminent sense ... Ken is the perfect hero, clearly a gem. Stockenberg has created an interesting cast of characters, provides a most satisfactory romance, and integrates the suspense element seamlessly into her story. This is a perfect book for a summer day -- or any other day, for that matter."

4.0 out of 5 stars So many surprises! August 14, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was a fantastic read, although if you're looking for a "beach read" type of romance I would steer away. There's a lot more behind these characters than most, the back story is rich and complex, and the characters just as much so. Frustration, misunderstandings and sexual tension abounds, but all of it is incredibly realistic. Often I find myself fed up with characters in romance novels for being so stubborn, but I always understood why the characters were behaving the way that they were in this book.

Another thing that I loved about this book was that Laura might yearn for a knight in shining armor, but she's not going to let herself fall blindly into a fantasy either. She's her own independent woman and while I occasionally found myself wishing that she had a little more romance in her soul, I completely understood how it had gotten stomped out. She's wonderfully raw in her emotions and her loyalties.

The romance is not the main focus of this book, although it's a very satisfying part of it. I loved that the family, old traumas, and the social connotations were just as big a part of the book as the love story. Definitely a good read, and definitely not just another trashy romance novel (although believe me, I love those as much as the next girl!)

This was a great read. I have just discovered this author and find that there seems to be more substance in her stories, as well as imagination. The love interest seems to have more depth than some others. Truly enjoyed this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another winner! April 23, 2012

A Month at the Shore is the third book I have read by Antoinette Stockenberg--and I've not been disappointed yet. There's always just the right balance between the drama and the lighter side, the romance and passion. I found everything I enjoy reading in this book-- including a murder mystery! As in the previous books I've read by this author, the dialog is snappy, the descriptions are vivid, and the coastal setting is lovely.

1.0 out of 5 stars What can I say...... December 30, 2012
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Verified Purchase
...I got this book as a free download and feel like I was overcharged. The characters were poorly developed and, frankly, unlikeable. From the meek sister to cliched old woman it was all very shallow and disjointed. Two of the main characters acted like self-absorbed, whiny teenagers. The intersecting story lines were feeble and forced with everyone harboring a bizarre obsession to a fringe character.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Boring Month at the Shore February 18, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Unless you like long, drawn out "woe is me because I was raised poor by an abusive father and ran away" and sexually descriptive scenes, this isn't the book for you.
I think it would be good reading for first year psychology students on what to look for in disturbed individuals!

1.0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing. August 15, 2012
By HN
Format:Kindle Edition
Have no idea how book earned 4 stars. I really wanted to like it. I kept reading hoping it would get better. After finishing 40% on my kindle, it was so boring and disjointed I finally gave up and read the ending...which I absolutely never do. It wasn't any better either. Not worth your time.

More About the Author

USA Today bestselling novelist Antoinette Stockenberg grew up wanting to be a cowgirl and have her own horse (her great-grandfather bred horses for the carriage trade back in the old country), but the geography just didn't work out: there weren't many ranches in Chicago. Her other, more doable dream was to write books, and after stints as secretary, programmer, teacher, grad student, boatyard hand, office manager and magazine writer (in that order), she achieved that goal, writing over a dozen novels, several of them with paranormal elements. One of them is the RITA award-winning EMILY'S GHOST.

Stockenberg's books have been published in a dozen languages and are often set in quaint New England harbor towns, always with a dose of humor. She writes about complex family relationships and the fallout that old, unearthed secrets can have on them. Sometimes there's an old murder. Sometimes there's an old ghost. Sometimes once-lovers find one another after half a lifetime apart.

Her work has been compared to writers as diverse as Barbara Freethy, Nora Roberts, LaVyrle Spencer and Mary Stewart by critics and authors alike, and her novels have appeared on bestseller lists in USA Today as well as the national bookstore chains. Her website features sample chapters, numerous reviews, many photos, and an enchanting Christmas section. www.antoinettestockenberg.com
