Good fit, sticky sole, both flexible and supportive, light, waterproof, and I appreciate the relatively subdued colors.

The shoe was one of the test winners from a test performed here in Norway. It has excellent grip and is comfortable, but the GoreTex waterproofing only lasts for 30 minutes. Now, after a year, it is not waterproof at all.

I've had these shoes for about a week. I've done a couple 15 mile and a handful of 6-9 mile trail runs on varied terrain. I've taken them through mud, sand, rocks, roots, leaves, and pine needles, good traction on all surfaces and they don't seem to hold the mud too badly. These shoes are light, sturdy, supportive and stable. They have enough cushioning to protect your feet from pointy rocks and roots but not so much that you feel like you have pillows on your feet. I like the fact that they are built low to the ground and have a roomy toe box. (Why do so many running shoes have pointy toes? I don't know anyone who has pointy feet.) I ordered my normal size and they were too small. The return was easy and the half size bigger pair were a little cheaper so I feel like I got a great deal on a great pair of shoes.

Awesome All Weather Running Shoes,

Live in Alaska and have used these in the rain, wind, snow and ice. Have run in 10 degree weather in 4" of snow and on sheer ice wearing strap on cleats. Feet have never gotten wet or cold. These shoes can't be beat. Fit is great. I normally wear EE wide, but couldn't find exta wide in Montrail so I got an extra half size larger and they fit great. Ordered a 2nd pair for when the first pair wears out, but so far the tread shows minimal wear after @ 75 miles.

This is my 2nd pair of Montrail trail running shoes and I absolutely love these shoes. The Goretex is great for hitting trails with mud/water. Very comfortable and good support and great traction. Also great for light hiking. Purchase a pair of these babies and your feet will love you!!

Best trail shoes I've owned. True fit. Very comfortable. Minimal break-in time. And I appreciate that they are available in a 12.5. This size can be hard to find.

Very comfortable right out of the box. Great for all kinds of conditions - wet, rocky, muddy, etc. Fits true to size. Like them for day hikes, in addition to off-road running. I usually wear old beat-up running shoes when out hiking, but these are a huge improvement.

the shoes have to be right. These are right, right out of the box. Cactus thorns don't penetrate the sidewalls. Stiff soles keep me from feeling the many stones on the path. Nice platform but does not seem to promote rolling my foot. Warm enough for a run in a blizzard and cat trax fit well. I have a difficult foot to fit with a narrow heel but I want plenty of room in the footbox. These are ideal. My feet are flat and intolerant of big hard arch supports. These are strong but they don't confine my flat "arch".

I returned this shoe because it was very uncomfortable. I do not return a lot of stuff so when something goes back it is really bad!

Goretex is a gimmick,
This review is from: Montrail Men's Mountain Masochist GTX Trail Running Shoe (Apparel)
Rating: 4/5Pro: light, tough, reliable, durable Con: get the basic Masochist, Goretex isn't worth it Testing Environment: Southern California mountain ranges, high sierras, day/dog parks Duration Since Purchase: ~1 year Description: I spend an average of 30 days researching and comparing items before purchasing. The Masochists were above and beyond all the other trail running shoes and did not disappoint upon testing. But the size 10.5 was unavailable in my area for the standard Masochist so I settled on this slightly more expensive GTX version. I figured if I hiked through a wet field one or two times it'd be worth it. Sadly, not the case. Here in southern California, Goretex is more of a sweat box than a moisture shield and if it weren't for my Smartwool socks my feet would be pretty damp at the end of a long day. When I did cross puddles in confidence my socks became damp - not because the water went above the Goretex lining, but because the Goretex stitching or taping was not a complete seal. Goretex aside, these shoes lasted a year now and probably more if I didn't start taking them on concrete. WARNING: The soles are soft - great for trails but wear quickly on roads. The shoe's skeletal shank provided adequate protection from rocks and bruising but I added a Superfeet green insole and never had any foot trouble. In closing, I no longer use my Scarpa SL M3's... the Masochists are so light and comfortable I see no reason to deviate except during winter adventures. |
