Love this shoe,

I have worn about 6 different trail shoes over the last few years (Addidas, Nike, ASICS, Montrail) and have become a Montrail fan in general. Loved and miss the Masai. Liked the Continental Divide -- great for long runs - but it didn't feel fast. The Streak does it all: fast, light, yet bomber enough for the long runs. Roomy at the toe so I don't get blisters on long runs. My only worry is durability: The sole is peeling a bit at the heel. But trained for and completed a 50k in comfort, lightness and nary a blister. My feet tend to be "hot" and these are nicely ventilated.

I run various types of dirt trails in Colorado. These shoes are excellent. I've been running in Montrails for about 2 years now. I found the older model Hardrocks to have a narrow footbox, which forced me to order wide widths. With the Streak, the footbox is a normal size and just perfect. The Streaks are fairly lightweight especially compared to the Hardrocks, but they still have a nice amount of cushioning. And the "trail shield" keeps rocks from beating up your feet on technical trails. My next pair of shoes will be another pair of Streaks.

I bought these shoes (now discontinued, I believe) at a sale at a local sporting goods store a couple years ago since I was needing some trail runners and they were the best available at the store--and on sale. I knew enough of Montrail to know that they are a good brand but figured that if I didn't like them for running, I could always use them for hiking.
OK, regarding the shoes. I love them. One nice thing about trail shoes is that, if you wear them only on the trails, the tread lasts longer than road shoes. Mine are a couple years old now and have hundreds of miles on them but still have well over half of their tread life remaining. They have great grip on rocks and can actually boost your confidence a bit when running some technical sections of trail. I wore these for the 2009 Mountain Masochist 50-miler and they worked great on every surface I encountered: pavement, dirt roads, forest trails, and rocky forest trails. They also carried me through the snow and ice of the 2010 Mount Mitchell Challenge and through the 2010 JFK 50-miler which has roughly 13 miles along the Appalachian Trail. Despite races like these and similar training runs, the shoes have held together, with nothing coming loose. I'm going to try the Montrail Mountain Masochists because they seem to be similar, and perhaps what replaced the Streaks. Mount Mitchell 2011 is coming up and if the Masochists don't feel right, I know my trusty Streaks will be there for me. |
