Although the two compositions of Claude Vivier are likely to be the disc's main attraction, it affords a fine glimpse into enjoyable works of lesser-known Canadian composers (or assimilated Canadians, as José Evangelista, though established in Montreal since 1970, was born a Spaniard 27 years earlier.)

In fact, it is remarkable how much Denis Gougeon's "Voix intimes" (intimate voices, 1981) sounds... as if it could have been written by Vivier. There is the colorful instrumentation comprised of 4 clarinets and a percussionist, the playful and dance-like melodies vaguely sounding like some Eastern ritual, the two soprano voices singing what sounds like an entirely invented language (no texts, and no explanation in the terse liner notes, but it may be a direct homage to Vivier, who also wrote much of his own vocal lines in an invented language, see anon). The witty music for chamber ensemble of Franco Donatoni also came to mind.

There is also much in Evangelista's "Clos de Vie" that recalls Vivier. The piece, written in 1983, is a direct homage to the composer, who had been tragically murdered in Paris at the age of 34, all the way to its title, a play on words which means "enclosure of life" but can be understood even as "closing of life", and heard as "Claude lives" (Claude vit). Evangelista's music is very subtle and mysterious, again very colorful and Eastern-inspired in its orchestration, the instruments being, re the liner notes, "treated as to create ambiguities between their respective timbres". I hear piano playing in the upper registers, maybe a glockenspiel, violin playing on harmonics, harpsichord, harp, viola. Well, I've checked on the net: not so bad.
