I was at this concert, and in fact wrote the liner notes for this album. It has been in and out of print for many years, and the most recent vesion I saw was issued by CBS in France. Like all the Montreux jazz concerts, it was professionally recorded by Radio Suisse-Romande, and is studio quality. Among other endorsements, rock artist Bruce Hornsby rates this among his favorite albums.

This performance is live at the Montreux jazz festival in the summer of 1970 and was the second time the Bill Evans trio performed at this festival, the first time being the grammy winning album with Jack dejohnette and Eddie Gomez. Overall this is a great performance full of energy with the tempos taken way up on classics like Israel and Peri's Scope, which by the way was hardly caught live on tape. I'm not sure why this record is so hard to find. I think they should put out all three Montreux albums in a box set. The recording quality isn't bad but not great the piano sound is alittle thin. I wouldn't reccomend this album to people just getting into Evans, but its worth the price simply because of Israel and Peri's Scope.

Forty years ago, I was the piano player in my high school jazz band and was looking for some guidance from a guest artist we had working with us, Brian Grivna, who had been playing alto with the Buddy Rich Orchestra. He suggested I listen to Bill Evans, and the next day I picked up this album on LP (remember those days?).

Well, I wore that album out, as I discovered in it harmonic textures and technical resources I'd never imagined, and so I'm pleased now to have it again on CD. These are lovely performances in which, I think, bassist Eddie Gomez steals the show (back then I had no idea one could do such things on a contrabass violin). It boils down to three really fine musicians working together.

Even after all of that time, this performance holds up quite well, and that, for me, makes it a classic, a real first love as in this album I discovered the power of the piano trio (I've gone on, of course to listen to a score more, involving greats like Oscar Peterson, et al).

Sadly, it was not long after I engaged his oeuvre that he passed. But as long as I have 110V AC in my home, I'll be listening, with gratitude, to this little masterpiece.

Although I was not at this concert, I did get to see this trio perform many times in the 70s and this CD represents a terrific snap-shot of what was going on at the time. The interplay is great and by and large Bill's perf is open and very accessible, unlike some of his 60s work. This CD is really worth tracking down. BTW, I think the recording quality it very good but not great, but only when compared to studio quality. And would someone please post a high-res version of the cover art. It's really beautiful and elegant when you see it in person!

Is worth the price of the CD.Is worth the price of the CD.Is worth the price of the CD.What is the point of the minimum length of the review? Would you tell Mr.Evans to play more notes??Great recording of a relentlessly talented musician.
