5.0 out of 5 stars One man's struggles to win a kingdom for his king., April 20, 1998
This review is from: The Montrose Omnibus: The Young Montrose and Montrose : The Captain General (Coronet Books) (Paperback)
Montrose was a patriot who sacrificed his family, his wealth, his land, and ultimately, his life in the service of his king. As commander of the royalist forces, Montrose and his small band of followers won a series of battles against the larger, better equipped Convanant forces. Tranter carefully describes the battle sites and tactics, bringing Montrose to life as a brilliant tactian. Stubbornly maintaining his loyalty to a king that didn't deserve it, Montrose is a tragic, yet admired figure in the history of Scotland.
