It should be noted that it is difficult to get this game running on newer systems and it has been widely determined that it won't run Windows 7; however, I've discovered a workaround. If you have Windows 7 Professional installed on your system (you can upgrade to it very easily from Windows 7 Home Edition), install Windows XP Virtual PC. Once you've configured Virtual PC, insert the game disk... but don't run it because it won't install. Instead, search in the game disk for "grail.exe." Once you've located it, right-click it and create a shortcut on the desktop (reminder, you should be on Windows XP virtual PC.) Right-click again and change the compatibility mode to Windows 95. The game will run now, but I recommend minimizing the Windows XP Virtual Machine window and changing your Windows 7 screen resolution to 640x480 or 800x600 so 'Holy Grail' will run in fullscreen on Virtual PC. The last thing I recommend doing is changing the appearance of XP to "classic" and turning off some of the advanced text features so that you can read the text in the game. Even though you didn't physically install the game data, your save games will still be stored on your hard drive. And that's all there is to it! I hope this helps some of you out there who have almost given up on getting the game to work like I almost had.
It sounds like a headache but trust me, it's worth it. So few fans of the movie are even aware of this game's existence and that is really sad because the game is an absolute blast.
This game was designed to run on Windows 95, in 256 color mode. Not having any Windows computers here on the farm didn't deter me from attempting to get it running on our favorite operating system, Linux Mint 17.1
Installing using WINE was of course our first thought, but it just wouldn't run that way. No matter then, we spun up a virtual machine using VirtualBox.
Grabbing an old Windows 2000 disk, I set up a VM for Win2k, then did the game install as normal.
The only hitch, is that you must set the Windows desktop to display at 256 colors. If you attempt to use 32 bit color depth, much of the text in the game won't display.
Now running smoothly, we can once again enjoy our quest for the Holy Grail!
Caveat: In the comments it appears some people were able to install it on Windows XP and Windows 7.
