Replace parenting books with one CD,
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Bad Mood Mom & Other Good-Mood Songs By Jamie Broz (Audio CD)
Sure, the music is catchy and lyrics are funny, but the real reason to put this at the top of the family car CD rotation is that after a few listens you will feel better about yourself as a parent, your kids will feel better about themselves, and you'll all be singing along to the chorus of "Are We There Yet?" (my favorite). As a bonus, you can throw away the whole shelf of parenting books; this album has songs for and about all ages (OK, ages 1 to 8 particularly), with devastatingly precise portrayals of each age. "I Am Five" and "I'm Six", for example, are completely different songs, but just from the titles alone you can spot the crucial distinction, the confident use of a contraction by the six year old. Now go and listen to the songs. The album ends with a promise that "we'll have to finish the story some other time". I can't wait.

I always thought that one of the most fun parts of parenting would be sharing great music with my kids. But it turns out that finding great kids music isn't that easy. There is so much junk out there! Bad Mood Mom is one of those rare CDs that my kids (5 and 2) both loved right off that bat, and which my wife and I don't mind listening to over and over in the car (or in the family room). The songs all have both a unique perspective (in terms of their subject and/or narrator) as well as a distinct musical style. While Broza's voice isn't virtuoso quality, it's got a friendly quality about it, and grows on you over time. Plus the music has what seems like an endless wealth of really nice touches--the creators obviously put a lot of TLC into this one. My 5 year old definitely relates to many of the songs, and laughs out loud during each listen. "Are We There Yet" is one of the funniest, and most truthful, kids songs I've ever heard. Anyway, you can get a decent flavor of the CD from the samples that are on this site. All I can say is that we're very glad we bought this CD, and look forward to Broza's next release.

All I can say is that Jamie Broza must be living at our home. He has captured so many of the joys/frustrations/hilarious & ridiculous moments of parenting, that it's scary...scary fun that is!Every song has something really special about it. We have way, way too many kids CDs in our house and car, yet somehow this one has stayed on the playlist for over 6 months, the best endorsement possible. Hope another album will be coming soon.

as a mother of four kids under the age of 9, i found the catchy, happy tunes of bad mood mom transforming me into a great mood. living in the great big state of texas, we spend countless hours in the car. how refreshing to have a cd that all the kids get excited about. i can actually relate to the jingles and my kids feel like it is written about them. cheers for this dad for producing a feel good, clean, fun product that the whole family can enjoy. it has become my favorite gift giving idea for birthdays, new baby, christmas and hannukah. extra kudos for the catchy title and darling packaging.

Someone gave me this CD and when I first played it for my daughter, age 6, she listened to it again and again. The best songs..."I'm Six," and "Little Sister" for instance, really get into the head of a child. I enjoy the music too and think this CD deserves wider distribution.

"Bad Mood Mom" Will Put the Whole Family in a Good Mood.,
By Johanna Garfield (New York, NY USA) - See all my reviews

The innate theatricality of this delightful collection of songs will appeal to grown-ups as well as kids. The pieces address such everyday concerns as irritating siblings, the frantic early morning stress of getting up and organized on time for school, car travel ("Are We There yet?"), and other familiar family problems. (Moms will be glad to hear there are "Bad Mood Dads" as well.) Writer-producer Jamie Broza also celebrates the thrill of getting another year older ("I am Five" and others)--a thrill for kids at least, and in songs like "Alone" and "Secrets," the themes cross all age boundaries. The orchestrations are original and lively, and Broza should consider working the collection into a full-length musical. With its melodic tunes, lively rhythms, wonderful orchestrations, and witty lyrics, it would be equally suitable for the stage. And if he doesn't use these songs, he shows great promise as the composer/lyricist of a future show. An added plus: the terrific cover art and brochure inside.

Music for Kids of all ages,

Jamie Broza has put together an amazing collection of kids songs for all ages. His extraordinary talent as a frequent emmy-winning composer and musician comes through in a range of styles and moods and a technical mastery that is all too rarely reflected in this genre. But it is the insights into childhood that make this cd so remarkable. With a song for every year from ages one to seven, Broza has captured as only a devoted father/songwriter could, the nuances of each age. Our one and three year olds happily swayed in their car seats behind us to "I'm Six" on a recent 10 hour drive and my wife took the cd for her kids-free commute to work the following week. Our favorites -- Little Sister and Are we there yet? have become refrains around the house but I am sure, as our kids grow over the next 6 years, others from this terrific collection will take their place.

This CD reminds me of the mediocre musical theatre that I used to feel compelled to sit politely through because my best friend was in the cast. I listened (politely) to the whole thing before consigning it to the box for the church rummage sale. It's probably too sophisticated to appeal to little kids but it's not sophisticated enough for adults. I frankly found it a little irritating. But what do I know? I can't stand "The Wheels on the Bus," either.
