MARC CAMPBELL OF THE NAILS SAYS THANK YOU,
By
This review is from: Mood Swing (Audio CD)
Finally, MOOD SWING gets released on cd. Better late than never. I'm delighted and surprised that MOOD SWING has connected with so many people.
And I'm really pleased that THE NAILS may be recognized as more than just the band that wrote and recorded 88 LINES ABOUT 44 WOMEN. My hope is that a new generation of listeners will discover MOOD SWING. Rock and roll is and will always be my religion and my passion. And at a time when rock has become more and more corporate and its message less and less provocative, I can say, absolutely, that I never got into rock and roll for money or fame. I got into it because I had no choice. When the spirits of rock and roll spoke, I listened and I made my move. p.s. Andru, if you're ever in Taos, New Mexico, look me up. The drinks are on me. Thanks, MARC CAMPBELL, THE NAILS.

Fuzzy Wuzzy's Summary:
***** Highly recommended with warm fuzzies! I was in college at UT-Austin when this album came out in the mid-80s and even back then, amidst all of the creativity of the punk and new wave movements and the great local music scene in Austin, this "Mood Swing" album stood out for me. The "88 Lines About 44 Women" was a perfect match for the great new wave songs of the time, their version of "Let It All Hang Out" will forever be the best version of it ever made, the "Home Of The Brave" song is awesome with both the music and smooth singing, "Phantom Heart" begins with exotic tabla before the driving beat comes in, and all of the other songs on the album are just really good rock-n-roll. Over time, I slowly converted my 1500+ overplayed vinyl albums into CD purchases, and this album was one of the few holdouts to the point where I had given up on the thought that it would ever come out on CD after all these years. So hallelujah, this CD **finally** is out, and, even better, includes the two great remixes. Unfortunately, this album also probably gets missed in the constantly changing history of music, and some people might even think of it as a one-hit wonder for the "88 Lines" song. But hopefully far more people can now appreciate the well-crafted set of songs that are on this CD. I have over 1500 CDs now, and this one ranks in, ohhh, my top 50 most-played CDs just in the 5 weeks that I have had it. Play this at a party, play this when you are stuck in a rush-hour traffic jam, but, most importantly, play it LOUD!

ONE OF THE GREATEST ALBUMS EVER RECORDED -- OBSCENELY IGNORED,

I don't frequently engage in hyperbole, but this album has ALWAYS been in my Top Ten favorite records of all time. Really. "Pet Sounds" by the Beach Boys; "Something/Anything" by Todd Rundgren; "Help!" (the Brit version) by the Beatles; and then there's "Mood Swing" by the Nails. How this record and the singular vocal talents of Marc Campbell could be overlooked in 1984 when this album came out -- and how it could remain unissued on CD nearly 25 years -- is indeed one of the great mysteries of rock. Do yourself a favor -- even if you've only heard "88 Lines About 44 Women", you need to hear "Home Of The Brave", "White Wall", "Mood Swing" and a killer version of "Let It All Hang Out" whose arrangement was stolen wholesale by Huey Lewis and The News for their song "I Want A New Drug". Buy this now; you won't regret it.

I heard Home of the Brave on WXRT in Chicago way back in the 1980s. I could never find the album, but always searched for it the new and used record stores back in the day. When the internet came along, I found this on vinyl and I was so happy! Finding it now on CD seems like even more of a miracle, it sounds fantastic and I love this music even more now. If all you know of The Nails is 88 Lines About 44 Women, you should get this CD and check out the rest of the tunes.

Finding this made my day. This is one of my favorite "albums" and I've been waiting years for it to come out on CD. Every song is great and the really cool thing about this CD is that it sounds great driving in the car, hanging out to, or at a party. The lyrics are great, so much better than most of what was out back then. I could talk about individual songs but its great in its whole and it is not a novelty album with one good song, its a great album with a cool song that turned into kind of a novelty song within it.
By the way, if you like this one, Dangerous Dreams is nearly as good. Kevin - you can keep that tape that you never returned in 86. Marc, I hope that you are finally making royalties from these songs.

The album is great for the drive to and from work. Great beats really pump you up and make the drive time fly. Extra tracks added after the original aren't necessary, but the skip button fixes that.

This is an album that has been on my wish list for a long time and has finally been released on CD. It was originally released in 1984 on LP and in my opinion, one of the better albums of the 80's.
Mood Swing has two of their biggest hits on it - 88 Lines About 44 Women and Let It All Hang Out. The Nails put together an excellent album and I think that the popularity of 88 Lines About 44 Women overshadowed the rest of the songs. Of course I like the two songs I mentioned but some of my other favorites on the album are Every Time I Touch You, and Home of the Brave. Lead singer Marc Campbell has a great deep voice and can really belt out some tunes. The guitars are subtle and the saxophone on a lot of the tracks really comes out and makes for a good song. This CD release also has a couple of strange remixes of 88 Lines About 44 Women and Let It All Hang Out. I have never heard these before and don't really know where they came from. I would have been happier if they just added the radio versions of the two songs.

Originally bought the vinyl LP version back in the eighties. Some awesome tracks (not least, "88 Lines ..."). This CD version is crisp, clear and well remastered. Classic New Wave with an edge.

I've been searching for this album for years. I bought it because I wanted the song "Home of the Brave" and am so glad I finally have it on CD. Apocalypic bebop, baby! That song and "88 Lines About 44 Women" are worth the price alone, and the rest of the songs are great 80s rock. Marc Campbell's voice is haunting and unique. If you dig 80s music, you owe it to yourself to give The Nails a try.
