I'm impressed, April 29, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Mood Swings (Audio CD)
I had only heard cuts from Smoking Gunn and one of the Ethnomusicology cds prior to picking up Mood Swings and I'd have to admit that I'm impressed. Gunn breathes new life into the organ trio format and is clearly getting his sound together. Whether the hip hop thing will win out over his straight ahead playing and whether or not he has a musical vision that will last is still unclear. But the playing on this CD is tight, emotional and at times quite hot. Don't dismiss this cat. He has a lot of head room in front of him!!

Who is better?, December 15, 2006
This review is from: Mood Swings (Audio CD)
I'd like to think that I have an open mind about life's possibilities. So if there's a trumpet player today as good as or better Russell Gunn, I'd like to know who that player is. I want to know so I can rush out and buy all of that player's CDs, just as I have bought all of Russell Gunn's.
Gunn's playing transcends time. He ranks among the giant trumpeters, past and present. who too still transcend time. If all the greats were alive and could hear Gunn play, they'd all give him a standing ovation. He is one of them.
