Five SWINGING Stars! Outstanding performances! This is the legendary jazz alto sax/tenor sax/flute virtuoso James Moody's final recorded work and it won the Grammy as the "Best Jazz Instrumental Album" in 2010 proving that age (Moody was 85) was no limit for this truly gifted artist. The inventive Mr. Moody was one of jazz' great improvisational delights: a wonderful balladeer and awesome when playing uptempo. Following on the heels of the brilliant Moody 4A, this recording again features the same excellent all-star rhythm section: the eminent pianist Kenny Barron, the excellece of Todd Coolman on bass and the exceptional Lewis Nash's protean drumming. Playing a set of standards from the both the pop and jazz music worlds, with a couple of originals, the music is uniformly excellent throughout. My top favorites are the latin-based "Speak Low" and "I Love You", a cooking version of Tadd Dameron's "Hot House", a sultry version of Benny Golson's "Along Came Betty", and Billy Strayhorn's "Take The A Train" delivered as an out of tempo ballad that shifts to an Ellington-like uptempo sizzler. It's fitting that the final quote on the last song "But Not For Me" is from one of Moody's most famous compositions, "Last Train From Overbrook". Great jazz from a legendary Jazz Master who has given us 50 albums over 7 decades and has left the bandstand for the final time. My Highest Recommendation. Five EXCELLENT Stars! (This review is based on an mp3 download. 9 tracks; time- 61:04. Note: Moody does not play flute on this recording.Read more ›
