My cats loved playing with this toy. Then, after a long period of supervised play, I turned the unit off and stowed the string according to the instructions on the box. However, a short time later, my cat figured-out how to pull the string from behind the rear side of the elastic band to which it is attached. She had managed to swallow most of the string, which is about 16"-18" long. Luckily, I was home, noticed what was happening and intervened by pulling over 12" of swallowed string from the mouth of my cat!

Of course, I immediately removed the toy from the door knob, studied the unit more carefully to understand how this had happened, then finally repackaged it in the box, putting it where my cats couldn't get to it.

In my opinion, there is a design flaw in the unit. Simply shutting off the toy with the string behind the back side of the belt is not enough (obviously) to prevent a cat from finding the string and then swallowing it. If the design were modified to place a solid plastic wall between the front side and back side of the belt, attaching the plastic to the sides of the belt housing, then the string couldn't be pulled back out by a curious cat.

In an effort to help improve safety and potentially to save a cat's life, as well as to help the manufacturer of an otherwise nice toy, I later called the manufacturer to advise her of what had happened and to present my suggestion.

The call was answered by a machine stating no one was available to take my call. But as I was leaving the message, a woman picked up the phone (sounding like I had woken her up. The call was placed at 10am EST on a Tuesday).

I began to tell her why I had called.

Easy assembly and when I hooked it up it only took seconds for my three cats to start pouncing. It also took seconds for the thing to stop working.

After about an hour of tinkering and debating on returning it, I figured out the motor was working fine, it seemed to be the elastic band was too tight - that or the roller was stuck. I put some cooking oil on the bottom roller and everything started working just fine.

It's been less than 24 hours and my youngest cat started crying at me this morning - he never talks. I turned the Fling-ama-String on and he was totally happy. It's even getting my oldest cat (14 years old) off his big rear end and exercising.

All in all, the cats love it. I just wished they had send some troubleshooting instructions along with it.

When I inserted the batteries for this toy and turned it on, our 3 kitten/cats (now a year old), went crazy over it.

Unfortunately, it only lasted 4 times before it died.

My electrical engineer husband thinks it's the internal switch that allows cats to grab the string and then let go. He tried fresh batteries, etc., and the product still works, but not long enough for our kitten/cats to grab it more than one time before it dies again.

Whatever the reason, it's pathetic to find a toy that cats really love that breaks after a few plays or just one.

This would be a most wonderful cat toy if it were more robust.

I bought this toy and my cats abuse abuse abuse it- and it still works and they still love it 6 months later. I am a veterinary student and I run a rescue mission. I have very young cats, very old cats and special needs cats. Every one of these cats loves this toy, even the 2 1/2 legged cat ad the 15 year old diabetic. However, as with ANY CAT TOY only allow play while supervised. Any toy that has string, loops, or any parts that can be dislodged should never be left unsupervised. This is not a babysitter. This toy, like many toys, should be put in a safe place unless there is direct supervision for play time (this also makes a toy more desirable because it is not always available). I have read the bad reviews on here and I agree that a cat can potentially get into trouble with this toy by getting caught up on the belt, getting wrapped up in the attachment belt, or eating the string. BUT that is the case with most cat toys! If you supervise your animals you will have absolutely no problems. It is when they are bored and alone that they get into the trouble. AGAIN- this is NOT a babysitter and it does NOT take your place for attention. I have seen many animals, not just cats, in the clinic after digesting some well intended toy: cats, dogs, guinea pigs, snakes, birds, reptiles, etc. This toy is much safer than many many toys that I have seen marketed for animals, or small children for that fact. Furthermore, I have bought many expensive motorized toys that didn't last two days before being broken by this group. This toys has been tugged on, slammed into the door and tortured for 6 months by 15 cats and, while it shows a little wear-and-tear, it still works perfectly and they still come running when I bring it out. It is a great buy and I highly recommend it.Read more ›

The motor completely stopped working after 6 weeks!!! It has two speed settings and the fast speed stopped working on the 3rd day.... and the slow speed broke later.

And it really sucks, because our cats just loved it. It was probably our youngest cats most favorite thing in the world.

Before it died it went through batteries like crazy and often got "stuck" (see the other reviews). This product would have gotten 4 stars and I would have gladly replaced the batteries every couple of days if it hadn't broke so soon.

I just can't see dropping another $20+ on a toy that will break again, then break his heart again, and then break my heart again....
