Book Description

May 20, 2005
The Moody Pews is a trippy ride through 52 devotionals that reconnects Baby Boomers/Gen Xers to the gospel through the pop culture of the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s.
Learn character development through The Beatles or Rod Stewart, and contemplate theology with Janis Joplin or the song Bye-Bye Miss American Pie. Understand your place in the Body of Christ through M*A*S*H TV reruns or Leave it to Beaver insights. Find definitions for salvation and faith through Dr. Seuss, McDonald’s, or Bob Dylan. Check out your own spiritual mental health with George Carlin and Lost in Space TV show. Celebrate your family with The Pointer Sisters and teach charity and service to others with Green Acres and The Hollies.
This pop culture gospel book is sure to reconnect any boomer to their youth and allow them to see their wild era experiences through the eyes of God, some rock and roll, and grace. Funny, easy to embrace, grace inspiring and yet unusually deep makes The Moody Pews a comfortable approach to Christian growth.

Review

“Just as Jesus reached people with plain talk and practical stories, Sandra Brown uses the same approach…with cultural icons, catch phrases and humor, she coaxes them to “lower the shields” and allow the Holy Spirit to “beam down” to fill needy hearts.”
Dr. Kathie Erwin, Author and Christian Clinical Psychotherapist

“Sandra Brown moves us baby boomers from the swinging 60’s to the front porch swing. She takes us back to a familiar time and shows us what we have always needed; a personal relationship with our Savior. It was a wonderful comfortable journey and I loved it!”
Vicky Jones, Ph.D., Professor/Lecturer

“Wow! What a fun, engaging book! Once you start reading this book, you won’t want to put it down…[Sandy] helps us to find deep Christian insight from our rock ‘n roll, Americana, TV generation, real-life experiences…Sandy gets us out of our church pews and takes us on a magic carpet ride to revisit the 60’s and 70’s, but this time connecting lasting, eternal Christian insights from those mutually shared experiences…As a songwriter, my goal is to write lyrics that are simple, yet convey a message that is profound. You will find “The Moody Pews” simply profound!”
Ric Blair, Christian Music Artist

“Sandy has written a witty, sensitive and relevant devotional that will not only be enjoyed by we ‘children of the 60’s and 70’s’, but it will speak to the hearts of all people – believers and seekers. Who would’ve thought that Woody Allen, Dr. Seuss, and Rocky Raccoon would all somehow speak Truth to me? ...”
Randy Evans, Senior Pastor

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and Enlightening!, April 18, 2005
This review is from: The Moody Pews: A 52 Week Devotional for the Flower Child/Baby Boomer (Paperback)
When I first picked up the book I couldn't wait to get to the next "chapter" to read the next topic. I found them to be both entertaining, enlightening, and true "flashbacks", which also made it fun. I love her way of telling stories with all the touches of reality and everyday life.

Thank you for sharing your life, your thoughts and your many experiences.

5.0 out of 5 stars I couldn't put it down!, April 14, 2005
This review is from: The Moody Pews: A 52 Week Devotional for the Flower Child/Baby Boomer (Paperback)
The front cover caught my eye first and the title made me very curious. After I opened up the book and started reading the first few pages, I found myself sitting there all night reading essay after essay. I scanned the pages between and thought "what a great idea to ask personal questions that we can answer to put it all into perspective for us personally", which I am doing currently.

Sandra shares so many great insights to life (some in a very humorous fashion) and I am learning a lot about myself and am growing in my walk with the Lord because of the open questions that cause me to read the scriptures that relate to the topic.

It's awesome and I recommend this book to everyone who wants to look deeper into their current world and find what has brought them to where they are today as they are sitting in their pews.

5.0 out of 5 stars Invading the Culture with a Relevant Jesus, April 12, 2005
This review is from: The Moody Pews: A 52 Week Devotional for the Flower Child/Baby Boomer (Paperback)
Finally, a book that allows my past (and current) love for Woody Allen, the Beatles, the Velveteen Rabbit, Dr.Seuss, Green Acres, Bob Dylan and Miss Piggy to interplay with my love for Christ! The author hasn't just written a book in which she tries to spiritualize anything and everything from the 50's, 60's and 70's, but she's written a down-to-earth, relevant devotional that will help the seeker, neophyte or mature Christian to allow their faith to influence their culture and vice versa without compromising that faith. I love the simple yet thought-provoking questions that follow each chapter. They are perfect for personal reflection or for a group of friends who are sipping green tea and spinning Electric Ladyland on vinyl. Although the book is certainly geared towards those who lived through these dusty decades, the message of finding relevance in all of God's creation is for all generations. I'll sum it all up with a simple line: I am a Christian, GOO GOO G'JOOB!
