Product Description

A lowpass filter removes high frequencies from a tone. It makes the tone sound more mellow or muted. The lower the cutoff, the more muted the tone sounds. Imagine a window shade. As it is pulled down, it cuts out the higher light, then the light from the middle of the window, then finally all the light. A lowpass filter does the same sort of thing to the sound spectrum. The moogerfooger filter is a direct descendant of the original Moog modular synthesizers. It contains two complete modular functions: a voltage-controlled lowpass filter and an envelope follower. The envelope follower tracks the loudness contour (envelope) of a sound, and produces a voltage that follows the dynamics of your playing. Every time you play a note, the envelope voltage goes up and then down. The harder you play, the higher the envelope voltage goes. The envelope follower opens and closes the lowpass filter. Think of the envelope voltage as an invisible hand that turns the CUTOFF knob up and down every time you play a note. Since the envelope follows the dynamics of your instrument's signal, you actually "play" the filter as you play your instrument. The moogerfooger filter is also a resonant filter. As you turn up the resonance, the overtones near the cutoff frequency are boosted. Resonance gives the moogerfooger filter the same classic Moog filter sound as the MinimoogTM and Moog modular synthesizers.

That other review is a bit vague so I'll put my two cents in... I do own this pedal which I use on my pedal board in a professional band as a bass player. First the bad news: It does not have a true bypass and it also utilizes a drive knob that can enhance the envelope sound but will not go away when the pedal is clicked off. I get around this issue by using a Boss LS-2 as the bypass switch (another good thing about setting it up this way is that you can crank the "amount" & "drive" knobs for an awesome envelope but then mix down the volume with the LS-2). Of course, this brings up problem number two: The size of the pedal takes up alot of room on a pedal board and if you are adding the Boss LS-2 into the mix.... its a space hog for a single effect. Those two things have reduced my rating of this pedal to a four star. On the Plus side, Ive tried alot of pedals and for sound this one is the best Envelope Filter in my opinion. So.. before you spend the money on it, try it out! If you cant at least check out the sound samples people have set up on you-tube and various websites. There are other good filters out there and I could see myself going those other routes mostly to save space but as far as sound of the actual effect I am getting goes, I am very satisfied with this pedal. Oh yeah, one final plus: the ability to attach expression pedals for each of the four effect parameters. Moog makes an inexpensive pedal that works great, I just wish they made it with a toggle so I could adjust all four parameters with one pedal.

My husband uses this in his band and loves it. I don't know much about it but he uses it a lot.
