Editorial Reviews

Hugo Montenegro already had a solid and storied career under his belt before his revolutionary 1969 release "Moog Power" was envisioned or the first Moog synthesizer was even built. In the mid-50s he was musical director for the Dragon and Caprice imprints where he worked with Dion. He then moved on to a similar position at the legendary Hi Fi imprint Time Records. Relocating to LA in the early 60s lead to a deal with RCA as well as a slew of work for film and TV including scoring two Matt Helm pics and penning the theme music to I Dream of Jeanie . By the mid-60s his own work was on the vanguard of Space Age Pop. When the Moog synthesizer was first made available in the late 60s its sound was fresh and very cutting edge. The instrument itself lead to a run of Moog flavored albums that went well into the 70s, Montenegro s "Moog Power" being one of the first, and best, of the Moog movement. "Moog Power" set the standard, with synth flavored interpretations of current hits like the Doors "Touch Me", "Aquarius" "Dizzy", and other hits of the day. In addition to these reinterpretations the Montenegro penned title track Moog Power brought the (then) futuristic sound of the synthesizer directly into the homes of millions. Now, lovingly remastered from the original sessions, Get On Down is proud to connect Montenegro's work with a new generation of fans eager to hear analog synths or those who'd rather just mix up some cocktails and enjoy the power of the granddaddy of Moog records, "Moog Power."

VERY MIDDLE OF THE ROAD COMMERCIAL POP MUSIC OF THE TIME PLAYED ON THE MOOG BY HUGO MONTENEGRO WITH A LOT OF VOCAL ACCOMPANIMENT AND BIG ARRANGEMENTS. NOT ENOUGH OF THE MOOG. I WAS DISAPPOINTED, SINCE SOME OF HIS ALBUMS FROM THE 60'S ARE GREAT (CHECK OUT "COME SPY WITH ME", THAT ONE IS ONE OF MY FAVORITES).

Average Moog Music. Concentrates more on the vocal side of music which is somewhat contrary to the intent of Moog, but nonetheless, a few good tracks. I recommend Dizzy and for a lounge-lizard approach to Touch Me (ala Doors).

In 1969, man landed on the moon, I graduated from high school, and Hugo Montenegro recorded MOOG POWER. The moog, of course, is the precursor of all synthesizers and an astounding discovery at the time. Obviously, music has come a long way since those fabulous sixties and makes MOOG POWER sound dated and irrelevant.
But in 1969, this was pretty refreshing stuff. In listening to this album now, I find it an enjoyable tribute to the electronic music scene. Mike Melvoin is credited as the moog's player with Hugo writing all the arrangements. RCA's "Living Stereo" gives headphone wearers the left/right separation, which I've alwaya enjoyed. The songs come from a diverse array of artists: Hair's HAIR and AQUARIUS; Association's TRACES; TOUCH ME by the Doors; Nilsson's DON'T LEAVE ME; Tommy Roe's DIZZY which also highlights synthesized vocals; and an embarrasing loungeworthy version of Sinatra's MY WAY. The featured soloist on four of the tracks is Gene Munford (?) and he's definitely a Tom Jones/Wayne Newton clone.
Fans of retrospective rock should enjoy this revisitation of a cultural phenomenon and respect the ingenuity of Montenegro's virtuosity.
