4.0 out of 5 stars Forward-Focused Vs. Ancient History
Those funky, warm sounds of the Moog synthesizer always make a mark. This soundtrack is really quite an accomplishment. 3.0 out of 5 stars Historic but not particularly good
I'm a long time Moog player and was hoping this cd was a bit more inspirational but I found it very generic.

Seems like the folks that put it all together didn't have some sort of agenda to put all the "moog masters" on there and the soundrack greatly benefits from it. They seemed to focus on artists who are making the most interesting sounds with the Moog at present, rather than toy around with ancient history. This record has some of the most amazing new electronic music being created today by the likes of Stereolab, Tortoise, Bernie Worrell and Bootsy Collins, and Roger O'Donnell. Newer artists really add something special with their contributions. I haven't heard of all the bands on this disc but I'm certain I will soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cool as Ice, January 9, 2005
This review is from: Moog (Audio CD)
Couldn't be a cooler soundtrack this year than Moog. Even if you aren't the biggest fan of synthesizer music (and I am not) this is still an amazing cd. Great songs by Bernie Worrell with Bootsy Collins on vocals and The Album Leaf. I also like the songs by Pete DeVriese and Money Mark (of the Beastie Boys). Really cool stuff. A bonus disc is also included (while not on the packaging) with all the great prog rock and new wave contributions of Moog synthesizer music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!, September 14, 2004

Wow! What an amazing record! Just when you thought there wouldn't be any more great Moog albums to come out here comes this compilation soundtrack to the upcoming feature film. Stereolab is back in full force with a classic synth track, Charlie Clouser (from Nine Inch Nails) comes in with some of the most wicked drum beats I've heard in a long while, and Tortoise brings to the table as emotional a track as I've heard them produce. I'm not familiar with all the artists on the album but there are other great tracks by 33, The Album Leaf, and Pete Devriese. Can't wait to see the film when it hits a town near me. The second disc is also outstanding with "classic" tracks from ELP, YES, and DEVO.

5.0 out of 5 stars Something for Everyone, November 16, 2004
This review is from: Moog (Audio CD)
Just caught the Moog documentary in Los Angeles and went out and picked up the soundtrack. Very cool movie and sweet sounds on the record. The best songs are the more dance-focused ones from Electric Skychurch, Psilonaut, and Meat Beat Manifesto. From what I undertand the first disc is made up entirely of exclusive music produced specifically for the film. The second disc has all the familiar Moog classics like Emerson, Lake, and Palmer & Yes. Basically the cd has something for everyone who has an ear for electronic music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Audio definitions of the Moog sound, November 2, 2004

This soundtrack for the Moog documentary is very well put together. The first disk contains all original music made for the movie. They all sound very nice. My favorite track is Charlie Clouser's "I Am A Spaceman."

If you like the Moog synthesizer sound, or are curious what the synthesizers can do, I recommend this album.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Soundtrack, September 26, 2004

Documentary films usually don't have soundtrack albums but this one seems to be a natural fit. I had limited expectations but they were immediately surpassed when I bought this cd set and took a listen. In my opinion the best two tracks are the last two, Tortoise and Roger O'Donnell (keyboardist for The Cure). Those two tracks really sum up what the Moog instruments can do, and they make an emotional connection with the listener. There are virtually no cheesy tracks on the record. The closest would be the track by The Moog Cookbook -- which is pure fun and brought a smile to my face. Other great tracks are by Pete DeVriese and Plastiq Phantom. A great purchase that would make any Moog fan proud.

5.0 out of 5 stars Moogtastic!, September 14, 2004
This review is from: Moog (Audio CD)
I actually got to see the film at a private screening in LA and it was awesome. Couldn't wait to get the cd when it came out. I'm a big Moog fan and synth music listener so I may be a biased but this cd is great! The best tracks are Stereolab, Roger O'Donnell from the Cure, and my very favorite is by The Moog Cookbook. I also highly recommend getting The Moog Cookbook's cds, especially the classic rock one. There isn't one track on this disc that is bad or shouldn't be there. The Baiyon track is weird but interesting...and no your disc is not skipping! Bob Moog is a god!

4.0 out of 5 stars Soundtrack to the Documentary, June 1, 2005

I just purchased the Moog documentary on dvd as well as the soundtrack. The film is simply quite amazing and a must see for all fans of documentary films as well as music buffs in general. While watching the film the music caught my attention. Wall to wall original compositions made specifically for the film. All the great Moog bands of the modern age: Stereolab, Tortoise, Devo, Gary Numan, Yes, Roger from The Cure, etc. Great music to sit back and let your thoughts run wild. I left one star off for no Wendy Carlos or Stevie Wonder (although it is explained why in the Directors Commentary on the dvd).

5.0 out of 5 stars What a Soundtrack!, September 29, 2004

This soundtrack to the documentary film by Hans Fjellestad really rocked my world. I saw the film in NYC over the weekend and my props to the filmmakers for bringing Bob Moog's story to the big screen. The tracks are all super fun. The Moog Cookbook composed a hilarious and wonderful track called "Bob's Funk". Couldn't be cooler. The legendary Bernie Worrell and Bootsy Collins also bring the funk with their track called "When Bernie Speaks". My other favorite is by Psilonaut whose track is like a techno love letter to the man with the plan, Bob Moog. Highly recommended soundtrack to all lovers of electronic music. Also comes with a neat bonus disc of Moog Classics.

5.0 out of 5 stars More interesting than the samples, February 22, 2006

I bought this album mostly for the Moog Cookbook track. I've seen the documentary and it's interesting, but certainly not the best documentary I've ever seen. I was left with more questions than anything. However, as I was listening to the soundtrack, I was really struck by the talent assembled for the project and the versatility of the instrument. Most of the music is more ambient/breakbeat which is where the Moog really shines these days. "Micro Melodies", "The Sentinel", and "Variation One" are great places to start.

The "hits" disc wasn't as interesting, but a nice bonus. I thought the TMBG track of the Disneyland Electric Parade was inspired, worth the price of admission. I didn't know anyone could ever be so stoned that they could listen to an 18 minute Yes song, though.

A lot of these songs really need time to develop, which is why the samples are nice, but not enough to show why you should get the album. The instrument lends itself to further development in the song, so when you hear a 30 second clip, you're really only getting a very small piece.

Overall, a VERY interesting look at what's going on in music these days (even if it is an older disc) and how Moog is still a big part of it.
