I really enjoyed the story of Moomin, Mymble, and Little My that my cousin sent to us from Finland for my son and daughter. Having since read some of the other Moomin books I am a big fan now. The stories and characters are charming and unique.
Construction: This is a nice, heavy board book. The pages are thick and shiny. My 9 month old likes to hold it but my 2 3/4 year old loves the pictures.
"Story:" Here are the numbers you'll find in here, I wondered about how far it went and what represented each so I will describe the pages a little below...each two page spread has two numbers represented except for 9, 10, and the last page:
1: One Moomin (he's hugging a tree) 2: Two Trees 3: Three Umbrellas (Moominmamma and the Snork Maiden are under two of them) 4: Four Clouds 5: Five Butterflies (above Moomintroll) 6: Six Flowers (two in the Snork Maiden's hair) 7: Seven Boats 8: Eight Shells (Moominmamma is picking them up) 9: Nine Fish (Moomintroll is fishing) 10: Ten Birds (Moomintroll is picking flowers and the birds are overhead) Lots and Lots of stars (my favorite page, it has Moomin and the Snork Maiden hugging on a bench under a night sky full of stars)
I think the last page is a nice touch. The colors are lovely and even if you have never read the other stories the characters are cute.
My husband and I loved Moomin's Book of Words and almost immdeiately ordered this to go with it. Our son loves to bring it to us to read to him and he turn the pages. It took a little longer for our son to let us read/count everything on each page - but by 18 months he was pointing along with me and moving my thumb to find the last flower or shell I had "accidently" covered.
We have a lot of fun with the pictures decribing what the characters are doing. The illustrations are simple and fun with nice bright colors that are appealing to our son but have enough clever details for us to expand on as he gets older. And I think this book will grow with him as when he learns to count.
Also, these are excellent quality board books - as good as it gets - and holding up beautifully.
This is a really cute Moomin book, the colors are great, the characters are represented in the true Moomin cartoon style. My 29m old son is really into Moomin at the moment (we have lots of Moomin toys), and we really like reading this cute book. Another reviewer has described the book in very accurate detail, so I would only add that given the book's sweet and simplistic nature, it's probably ideal for the under 3 year old set, and not much older. Sweet book.
are you a moomin lover? if you are or not you will love this darling counting book. nice hard pages can handle little hands. colors are bright and children will be engaged. thank you moomins! i love you!
We have many, many board books, but this is one that my kids keep coming back to. The pictures are clean and simple; the colors bight and vivid. A great way to introduce the little ones to the world of Moomins. Highly recommended.
I bought this book along with Moomin's little book of Words for my son's first birthday. They are incredibly sturdy books, but he loved them so much that he literally tore them to pieces. He is the owner of many board books but he always seems to want to grab these, even in their current state. He is a huge fan of the Moomins. I highly recommend these books for the tiny Moomin lover in your life! I am replacing the books he destroyed as a present for his second birthday.
This Scandinavian character is adorable. This particular one is for toddlers, for learning how to count, but we have other books as well. All recommended, as long as the children are used to sit down and observe the details
