5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect introduction to space for young toddlers, January 6, 2006
This review is from: On the Moon (Hardcover)
"The moon is very, very far away. What do you think it would be like to go there?" this book begins . . . and sets out to answer the question in engaging, simple prose that is perfect for the very young (many of the other space books we saw were too complex for the under two set). Our two-year old son was fascinated with "On the Moon" when he was 18m, and it is now one of his favorites. The illustrations are bold and lovely - a combination of cartoon figures and real-life photos - and we appreciate the fact that the main character is a little girl dreaming of being an astronaut. At 20m, we took our son to the Air and Space Museum - and he identified big rockets, moon buggies, astronaut suits, etc. with delight. In short, a wonderful first book to introduce the moon/astronauts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome picture book, January 23, 2008
This review is from: On the Moon (Hardcover)
This is an awesome picture book to be read to children age 1 to 5. Children who can read also love reading it to their younger siblings. It's beautiful with lots of pictures and educational to learn about the moon and astronauts. The kids love this book and read it over and over. There are other great picture books on www.suesbooks.info. I have collected loads of these books. Can't get enough of them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Moon Book....Fit for a Toddler or Two, July 20, 2009
This review is from: On the Moon (Hardcover)

With all the discussion about this being the 40th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing and the synchronicity of our present space shuttle "on the moon", remembering by re-enacting the walk on the moon, it's fitting to find a toddler's book to read. In it's simplistic language, and primary script, the story of the first landing on the moon is portrayed to a young child in a way that is capable to be understood.

Simple language draws the child into being told about the Moon and that it is possible for humans to "step out onto the moon", in real time. Incremental thoughts are fed to the youngster, without a lot of scientific jargon getting in the way. Take for example, the words: "It takes four whole days to reach the Moon." What could you do with your child over a four day span to reinforce the concept of the amount of time being talked about? Maybe, you could create an activity of watching day and night, eating and sleeping included, or whatever activity the child is involved in. Perhaps, you could tape some very large paper from one of those painting rolls, onto a wall, or the floor, divide it up into four parts, draw suns for daytime and stars and moon for night time, and mark it in some way, each day or half day showing all the activities going on in your house.

We have all heard the famous phrase for those who transport their children in cars for great distances "Are we there, yet?" Maybe this will give the youngster an idea of what a "very long time means".

Some of the illustrations are just cartoon-like drawings, while others have backgrounds taken from actual photos of the moon. If you and your child look at the illustrations, you will even see some footprints on the moon. Now there's an idea for making footoprints in the sandbox. I have left out many details so that you, too, would read this story to your toddler.

Happy Flight! Happy Landing!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great!!!, May 4, 2008
This review is from: On the Moon (Hardcover)
I have a two year old boy and struggle constantly to find him non-fiction books that don't have to do with cars and trucks! It seems Anna Milbourne is who I am looking for. On the Moon is age-appropriate (toddler/pre-schooler), full of interesting facts, and has great illustrations. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book!, March 2, 2008
This review is from: On the Moon (Hardcover)
This is the book for you if you have a child interested in space. My oldest son is 3 & loves this book. My youngest child is 1.5 & can already say "rocket!" & "astronauts", pronounced "ternuts & ockets"
The illustrations in this book are wonderful. They are actual photo type images of the Earth & moon with cartoon images imposed over them. The text is short, simple & perfect for early readers. It just catches their little imaginations.
This book also encourages imaginative play related to space. We have looked for moon rocks & taken many pretend space flights since buying this book. I can't say enough good things about this book.

Each of my three sons, currently ages 5, almost 3, and 1, enjoy this book. We liked it so much we bought it to donate to my sons' preschool! It is a short read but contains simply presented pertinent facts about travel in space. We recommend!

My 3 yr old son loves space. He has two space books, and this one is by far his favorite! The amount of text and the detail of information is perfect for his attention span. He loves the pictures, too. I like that he can see the real moon (in photos) with the comfort and familiarity of cartoons. Gives factual data in a fun way he can understand without being overloaded.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice Narrative Style, September 27, 2010

This review is from: On the Moon (Hardcover)
This book is exactly what I was hoping for: a narrative story of the Apollo missions in simple language that my 2 year old can understand. He is very fascinated by the idea that people once went to the moon and this book does a great job illustrating all the steps taken by the manned missions. The text is very simple, but the illustrations have just enough detail that my son loves to point out and talk about things he sees ... but not so much detail that he is overwhelmed.
