Any Brazil-bound traveler interested in independent budget travel through the country will find the Moon handbook on Brazil a wonderful travel planner and take-along tote. It packs in maps, small color photos, and details on local color, from festivals and events and historic attractions to accommodations at all price levels, food, and getting there or getting around. A wonderful guide, this packs in practical information key for any planning a trip.

I only went to Bahia for one week, this guide provided me with good info on the highlights of Salvador and surroundings. It also gave me a quick overview of the Brazilian history. I would have liked more maps.

I was reading this book and liking the layout and info, then realized they skipped over Vitoria city(one of the largest in Brazil) and Esperito Santos state altogether, which was an area I plan to visit.. Not comprehensive apparently :(

Terrible coverage of the Amazon region,
By QuiuboMona (East Bay, CA) - See all my reviews

I used this on a recent trip to Manaus, Santarem, and Belem, and I would NOT recommend it for those areas. It had us running around Manaus searching for restaurants that had closed or no one had heard of; cost us DAYS of delay (and about $400) in Santarem because the ferry schedule it lists is incorrect, so we ended up flying; and entirely missed one of the most spectacular sights we saw, the Floresta Nacional (FLONA) outside Santarem. It wasn't as bad for Belem--in fact, I think I found some good restaurants there (hence the two stars)--but if you're going beyond Belem, this is really off the mark. I've traveled a LOT and am used to guidebooks getting some things wrong/outdated, but this was egregious. It was so bad that while on my trip, I ended up downloading the Lonely Planet chapters on the Amazon, which were MUCH better.
