Book Description

November 11, 1997
More than just a sweet Chinese pastry eaten during the Mid-Autumn Festival, a moon cake is a morsel of tradition....
The second daughter of successful Chinese parents, Maya Li grows up in Ohio, raised on equal measures of steamed rice and sliced white bread. Never a stellar student or an ambitious careerist, Maya seems content to stand in the reflected light of her beautiful, talented sister. Now, working in New York City in a series of dead-end jobs, she finds herself heartbroken and in search of the sense of self she lost with the sudden death of her beloved father and with the end of a poignant love affair.
Then, almost accidentally, she is drawn to the country of her parents' youth. Maya embarks on a trip to China, much to the bewilderment of her aloof sister and preoccupied mother, both of whom never looked back on their legacy of sadness.
Seeing too much in too little time, Maya and her tour group rush through temples, tombs, and beyond the Forbidden City. As she emerges into the rural peasant countryside, Maya's mind is awash with both memory and discovery, remorse and wonder. One thing emerges clearly: She is on a journey of the soul, and her connection to the land of her parents' birth is enduring.
The unfolding geography--of both China and Maya's inner, private landscape--emerges vividly in this haunting first novel about a young woman coming to terms with her personal and ancestral history and with the increasing complexities of what it means to be American.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Louie's emotionally resonant first novel, about a Chinese-American woman's journey to the land of her ancestors and into her own past, is told in haunting prose but lacks a fully developed narrative. Maya Li, who's in her 20s, is traveling through China on a six-week package tour, a spur-of-the-moment trip undertaken more to escape her dead-end life in New York City than in response to any particular attraction to China. Yet Maya's insulated, monument-hopping vacation prompts an internal exploration of her own inner geography as she excavates and examines her Ohio upbringing and later years. Her beloved father's sudden death when she is 11 leaves young Maggie (who will later change her name to Maya) to grow up with an emotionally cold mother and an ambitious, selfish older sister. The wrenching end to a college love affair strips her of direction, leading her to drift through four numb years in New York. Louie attempts to mirror Maya's personal losses in the unresolved cultural losses suffered by immigrants in America, but the connection is never made with significant narrative impact. Still, with the ability to write stately, beautifully dignified prose, and with her insightful grasp on ethnicity in America, Louie could be a compelling novelist?if only she would hone her storytelling techniques. 35,000 first printing.

From Library Journal

Like the author, protagonist Maya is a first-generation Chinese American, born and raised in Ohio. Maya lacks any sense of self within a nonnurturing family; a loving father dies when she is young, leaving her with a cold, unemotional mother and a highly ambitious, self-absorbed older sister. She flounders through youth, college, and relationships. Turning to New York City, Maya, the bohemian soul-searcher, ponders life, self, and cultural identity. On a whim she signs up for a tour package to China. This could have been a turning point in the novel but it isn't: in China, Maya meanders about seeking meaning, and bits of identity and direction emerge only occasionally and fleetingly. This first novel will not hold many readers but will appeal to some for its cultural content.?Cynthia Ann Cordes, Onondaga Cty. P.L., Syracuse, N.Y.

I am so sorry this book is already out of print. This was one of the most beautifully written, engaging novels I have ever experienced. It really helped me get through some tough times. I need to buy my own copy!

5.0 out of 5 stars A good book for people searching for theitr own sense of ide, April 7, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Moon Cakes (Hardcover)
I first read Moon Cakes several years ago and found it to be a genuine and fascinating novel about a young woman trying to make sence of her own life. This particular young woman was of Chinese decent, I am not, but found that in many ways that the feelings about sense of place and sense of self that permeate this delicate novel are applicable to a wide range of young adults. I agree with the reviewer who wrote that the book helped her through some tough times, because I am finding myself looking for it now when my own life is in transition. It is a wonderfully crafted story whose tone reminds me of Lydia Minatoya's "Talking to High Monks in the Snow". Its one weakenss, I thought, was its "surprise" ending--although perhaps I wasn';t as careful a reader as I should have been. It should still be in print. I look forward to reading more by Andrea Louie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Up-and-Coming Author, November 1, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Moon Cakes (Hardcover)
I am always on the lookout for up-and-coming Asian-American writers and searched high and low for Andrea's first novel after hearing about it from a friend. After reading the book, I thought it was worth every effort in my search for this well written novel. Andrea Louie has the potential to be one of the finest authors in this century if she continues to explore her writing technique and style. I hope to see her blossom in her career and look forward to her future writings.
